Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November 12, 1997 - Page 6 Local effort aims to provide relief for North Korea Local volunteers, led by Linda Lewis of Monticello, are busy organizing an effort to send quilts, blankets, and warm clothing to North A shipment of Korea. Covers for Kids" will be sent to the needy people in Korea in North Korea, a country of about 23 million people, has suffered since the demise of the Soviet Union in 1989. Due to flooding in 1995 and 1996, they lost over half of mid-Januar- y. their usual annual production. In 1997, they had equal losses due to drought. The severe famine conditions for the past three years have left little to exist on. Gary Flake, a Utahn who recently returned from North Korea, said, Go home and pour as much rice as you can into your hand. Then see if you can make three meals out of it. That is the situation many of the North Koreans are in. They simply dont have enough food to feed their people." The total economy is severely depressed. Fuel is restricted, coal mines are flooded and there is a lack of cash flow to resolve the situation. Medical attention is severely lacking and large hospitals stand virtually empty because of a lack of food and medicine. Relief effort organizers say the children of North Korea have been particularly hard hit and are in desperate need. Individuals, groups, and communities in the area are invited to join together and make Covers for Kids". If you dont make quilts but want to donate material or money, drop it by Blue Mountain Chiropractic in Monticello or Blanding. Completed projects can also be left there. A list of guidelines and pattern instructions are available at the Chiropractic office or at Black Oil in Monticello. Lewis adds that as the Season for Giving" approaches, please remember those who are suffering. You will be doing and making things that are really needed. These people are REALLY destitute. There is a spirit in this work of reaching out to those in need regardless of political creed, regardless of race or language - just because there is a need.
