Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 21, 1993- - Page 2 hard times High times, released musical late last a Walt Disney year to a subject dear to heart of every newspaperman. It was called Newsies about the newspaper boy strike which eventually lead to what was called the Childrens Strike, an historic event which crippled New York City about the turn of the century. One of the songs in this 1992 musical uses the same title as this column. The chorus of this song says: High times, hard times. Sometimes the living is sweet and sometimes theres nothing to eat, but I always land on my feet. So, when theres dry times, I wait for high times. Then I put on my best and stick out my chest and Im off to the races again. As the Newsies sing this, the thought came to mind that San Juan County has seen high times and hard times ... be it in water years, oil boom and bust, mining high times and pull outs, or just in general economic good times and bad. San Juaners have a tendency of landing on their feet, also. The tenacity of San Juan farmers and ranchers is literally legendary. Business people here have become adept at cutting costs before that was so in vogue nationally. put on our best, and stick out our chest because, with the coming of the summer tourists and with a good water year We need to all its behind us, it is time for all of us to again say off to the races again. grow up mature and responsible and able to better deal with life. It is unfortunate that we spend so much on drug related programs only to ruin it all by approving of examples like this. Our teenagers are not stupid. Evidently it is hard enough to make choices with a functioning brain, why then do we suppose it can be done just as well on a !! would be impaired also? Medicine has been a part of our world. Dr. Warren did a good job of bringing two healthy babies into the world for us, as well as helped us at other times of need. We have lived with doctors; we have lived with nurses, and our empathy extends far beyond to the various other people and their families in professions who are over stressed in meeting the needs of a public and their deadlines such as truck drivers, security, highway patrolmen, etc. But let us not forget that choices bring consequences, and teach our children that it applies to both teens as well as adults so that maybe our next generation can your family that is never known. Alice Adams Lemuel Hardison and Julia D. Redd, R. N. Monticello Dear Editor, I attended a City Council Meeting Wednesday eve- ning where one of the topics discussed was about discontinuing the fireworks for the July 24th activities. The reason given was because last year the money raised was not enough to cover the $2000.00 expense. I for one enjoy the fire- works and have thought of them as the finale to the days activities. Councilman Allen asked me if I would chair the committee to raise funds for the fireworks this year. I accepted. It should cost around $2500.00 for the fireworks this year. I would like to see the whole town pull together and support the fireworks. My committee will be contacting the businessmen to ask for donations, so please give it some serious thought. If individual families would like to donate to the fund we would really welcome your help. If you would like to mail a donation for the fireworks account just make your checks payable to the Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 927, Monticello. I thank all of you who are planning to support the fireworks gram. pro- Sue Morrell Monticello Dear Editor, A special thanks to everyone who worked at the Bloodmobile, those who came to donate blood, and to the relief society ladies who made the delicious cookies. Thanks, too, to the San Juan Record and KUTA for advertising it so well. You all helped to make the Monticello blood drive a cess! suc- Rita Walker Assistant Administrator San Juan Hospital Dear Editor, Lets stop throwing dirt at Dr. Warren and think of the things that are bad in Monticello Dear Editor, I am an endangered species but the wrong one. I am a small business man. GAD I wish I were a spotted owl. Joe F. Lyman Blanding Dear Editor, Your recent editorials have been greatly appreciated. In contrast to Denise Frosts comment to the editor, the subject of coopera- tion between Blanding, Monticello, and all other parts of the county, both from the elected leaders and the general citizens, is a subject which cannot be emphasized strongly enough or often enough until it becomes a reality in action, thus correcting a longstanding spirit of competitiveness which has only been hurtful for the development of the county. True, as D. Frost stated, there are good strong people in San Juan County with good strong ties to one another; but apparently not enough who are willing to put the county as a whole ahead of competition between towns, or the best interest of the county as a whole ahead of ethnic con- - siderations. Competitiveness is bred in the young people in all areas through their sports program; and this is a good and effective teaching tool for teaching loyalty to their own school and community. But when we mature we should be able to mature in our attitudes also, and enlarge our loyalties for the best good of the entire county, or even state if ap- plicable. Examples of misdirected town and ethnic loyalties at the expense of our county as a whole have been numerous in the past. Keep harp- cooperation and county loyalty until it becomes a reality. And thank you for publishing a newspaper that the entire county ing on can be proud of. Sue Winkler |
