Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday 7 be Around to another gray day with fog Hat and mist blanketing the cliffs across the river, with snow accenting the convolutions of the red rock by Doris Valle mi The whole world is in a state of chaos as we go into this new year. In the United States we have the homeless, a heights. How disease devastating called AIDS which thus far has no cure, senseless violence in our streets, and a growing fear of economic disaster as giant corpora- tions grimly announce their plans to close plants. As I read Time Magazine I get confused at how many people around the world are shooting at each other for one reason or another or no reason at all. And the Soviet Union, which was a world power this time last year, seems to be suddenly a lot of pieces of country with a lot of people wondering whos on first. I worry and wonder and then think about Mex Hat, where we continue on our way, with little to worry about except the weather. I open my eyes each morning MOAB BLANDING Finley Bayles BLUFF Clemma Johnson F. Benmon Redd Georgia Hamblin . . . Of course Ive been whining about the weather as much as anyone else until this afternoon when the sun came out for one brief shining moment. I was walking up the steps to my house when a dark shadow suddenly loomed before me. I was startled until I realized the shape was much like my shape and identified it as my own shadow. When Im writing a column, it might be nice if I had subject matter more exciting than my shadow to offer. We did have a census of our own, conducted by Lisa Lund and Mike Tonge this past week so wed know how many of us are here drifting around in the fog. Seems they were very excited after they drove over the snow and through the fog. They inadvertently left the pickup lights on as they started out on their ad- venture. When they returned, the lights were still on. Dale turned on the ignition and the starter gave one brief lurch and then subsided. Im not going to sleep up here in a truck, Jerry declared. Its 30 miles from here to Mexican Hat, Lund told him. You walk down there and Doris Valle will bring you back in her four wheel drive and I have jumper cables. Im not sure Jerry gave the matter due consideration as he started to walk. He was not thinking about the fact that he had seven miles to go to the main highway, and he probably didnt know that very few people are going to be dumb enough to be driving around up there, even on the highway, after dark at this time of the year. Jerry was a lucky man. Lucky that he didnt become a frozen man. After 30 minutes or so with the lights off, Lunds pickup starter You Know Us. We Know You. In a brief bio of Jens Peter Nielson, Topping writes, In 1929, Nielson reports there were about people living at Mexican Hat which he identifies as the same as Goodrich. There is also a store there. Lisa also told me the original Marlboro man has been in town. Hes Daryl Winfield from Riverton, I dont know Wyoming. how that guy could be so neat looking if he really has been smoking Marlboros all those 23 years he has been posing on a horse or by a campfire or just anywhere in the great outdoors. Lisas mommy and dad, Dale and Sharon Lund, were a brief welcome addition to our population this last week. When the Lunds lived here, they were completely charmed by everything but they were particularly enchanted by orfe of the mesa Anasazi ruins, Citadel House. They had a friend, Jerry Knight, with them on this trip and they were determined to show him that magic place.
