The Elephant Man is presented by Southern Utah University of Cedar City and is brought to Monticello by Blue Mountain Entertainment Association in cooperation with the Utah Arts Council Performing Arts Tour. Admission is by BME or Kigalia Fine Arts Council season passes or by tickets purchased at the School door. The Elephant Man received the 1979 Tony Award for Best New Play of the Year, American theatres highest honor. As a long-runnin- g Broadway and London hit, The Elephant Man is sure to affect Utah audiences the same wav it has touched and affected audiences throughout the world. The Elephant Man is directed by Roger Bean, director of some of SUUs theatrical hits. This production of the play was originally pre- sented at the Randall L. Jones Theatre in Cedar City in November 1991. It went on to win awards from the Rocky Mountain Theatre Association and the American College Theatre Festival, which recognizes excellence in theatre across the nation. The play tells the story of John Merrick, Victorian Englands elephant man. People attending the play will not see an actor dis- guised in hideous makeup, says Director Bean. Playwright Bernard Pomerance wanted to take away the outer shell, so that we might see the inner being of John Merrick. It is this discovery of John Merricks inner self that elevates us, the audience, to a new understanding of our own human spirit. SUU theatre faculty member Richard Bugg plays Frederick Treves, the doctor who discovers John Merrick and sets about to care for him the best that Victorian society will allow. Playing the role of John Merrick is sophomore Brian Vaughn of Scottsdale, Arizona.
