You can describe it, but you cant dowment. Theirs is a cafeteria approach to religion. Eastern religious practices are used side by side with Native American Indian rituals such as sweat-lodge- s define it. Its not the gate. By just reading their credo I quoted, you can see a melting pot of the trendiest movements of the 60s and 70s. You have the holistic health and diet ideas combined with the brainexpanding human potential ideas, the 60s bumper sticker Peace and Love and a little religion thrown in. The only thing missing is Save the Whales, but I guess that is It is the New Age. its not religion, its not science and medicine, but it has elements of all three. If it were an industry, It would be worth billions of dollars. Ive written about . the consumer aspects of New Age several times over the last two years and still have not been able to pinpoint what it is, but I do have some snapshots. There is a place I visited in the hills of ' North . Central California called the Heart . . and fire dances. The church also has the requisite natural foods kitchen, astrology readings and communal work and cooking arrangements. They are careful however, to call themselves a community, not a commune. There are a lot of oddly implied. All the ideas presented by this New Age haven are noble, dressed folks with strange names such as Tanha and Zara along with unfortunate children stuck with names like Kiva and Angel Rose. There is an but when you put them Consciousness Church; strictly research, you see. They define themselves as centering their lives on the essence common to the Human Potential Movement, the Holistic Natural together it sounds a little like a cliche salad. In reality, the Heart Consiousness Church started off as a hot springs resort not unlike many of those along the Wasatch Front. This church exists as a healing and seminar center. It is sort of a Baskin Robbins of massage with about 31 types and variations. Massage seems to be a big part of New Age teaching, but the New Age word for it is the more general bodywork. Equally prevalent among the workshops offered are various types of meditation and hypnosis. These courses are usually linked to some type of self improvement although . Movement, and Universal Spirituality and aspire to bring about the New Age of Peace and Love upon Planet Earth. Like many churches there is a wariness of strangers. I immediately started thinking of all those Moonie and books I had s captured-by-cult- read and started getting a little edgy myself. It wasnt like that, though. Most New Agers arent too evangelistic. They seem content to let visitors observe and pick and choose among the New Age practices they believe. Bill by The Relief Society ladies met at the home of Belva Nielson a week ago to watch a video she had made of. her trip to Matzatlan in Mexico. It was so beautiful we all went home with a desire to experience it, too. Kevin Guymon spent a couple of days in Salt Lake, taking workshop classes. Ruth and Art McKelvey went to Monticello for a visit with Stephanie and Doug Pehrson. Stephanie and Ruth attended the clogging contest and enjoyed it very much. Ruth said there were members of clogging teams from Moab, Monticello, and Blanding. The young ladies of our LDS Branch came home from the basketball tournament held in Blanding in a state of both shock and elation because they WON! They are now so confident of their abilities that they have challenged the young men to a game. In fact, they have challenged the men too. The Nielsons at the K & C are getting their motel units put in place. It should be interesting watching them go up. There always seems to be a need for more motel space during the tourist season, and I hope this will be a successful venture for them. Spring has brought out the urge in a lot of people to work on their houses and lots. Steve the film. Davis is staining the floors of his upstairs bedrooms and will soon be able to put the furniture back in the rooms. People are out cleaning their lots. Ive done a little raking and I see Gail Mohrman working on her place, and Kathy Simpson on hers. I do so little at a time on mine that Ill be lucky to get anything accomplished before next winter. However, I do go out to check on the growth of my crocuses every morning and see how the budding leaves are progressing. I tell myself not to get too excited about all these signs of spring. March came in like a lamb, so we may have it go out very lionish and freeze every- thing that has done so well so far. In the meantime, Im enjoying all this beautiful weather. I havent walked much lately, but yesterday I made it up on the graveyard hill and looked over the valley.
