Show TteSwjtotawi American Indians find strength in census numbers There's strength in numbers, and Native American Indians can strengthen their numbers by standing up and being counter in the 1990 Census. A complete and accurate count means greater political and economic power for American Indians. Census Why is the Amerto especially important 1990 ican Indians? Thank you. Dear Editor: We were greatly saddened to read of Calvin Blacks pending resignation as a County Commissioner. We were happy however, to read Sam Taylors editorial about Calvin in the Times. It was a good, just and deserving tribute, and an honor, coming from a hard driving politician such as Sam, and we say amen to all his statements. We laud Calvin for his dedicated service to San Juan County and the State of Utah these many years. We helped to elect, and have supported him in all his projects and efforts over the years. We feel he was fair to the South and North ends of the County, as well as the Middle. We in Bluff knew if we called Calvin, we would get the help we needed in response to our problems. He has spent many hours in meetings in Bluff trying to solve our differences, and I do not remember his ever refusing to come to a meeting, unless he had a previous commitment. We know no one will ever be able to fill his shoes, and it will be very difficult to find someone to take his seat. A good fair politician is hard to find, as we in the southern end of the county can testify. Thanks Calvin! We send our love and prayers to you, and your family, and say NEVER GIVE UP. Sincerely, Clarence and Clemma Johnson Bluff SOLAR ELECTRICITY for your remote home or cabin. The Census count also affects the drawing of local political district boundaries. Funding: More than ners, private businesses and governments at all levels use census information to follow trends, make critical planning choices and determine where social services are needed. Dear Editor: People in San Juan County and, in fact, everyone who earns their living in Utah need to be interested and ready to keep Utah free free of being locked up in Wilderness. If southern Utah gets locked up in Wilderness then no one can live here because we depend on the land and the people. Actually isnt that what everyone everywhere depends on the land and the people? We need the people in northern Utah to help fight Wayne Owens on the Wilderness lockup. Owens isnt on our ballot. You dont want all of us to have to move to northern Utah, do you? Wayne Owens isnt working for the rights of the people in Utah when he fights to have so much of Utah locked up in Wilderness. What if Brigham Young had said, No, this isnt the place. It is too beautiful. We must preserve it for future generations. He didnt say that and he' wouldnt say that now. He set in motion plans to make what became Utah liveable. He sent people to all areas to colonize it, to make it accessible. That is still what Utah needs. May God bless Utah. Sincerely, Afton Grover Dear Editor: At last! A bill, H. R. 3848, introduced by Rep. Frank Annunzio is seen as a vital first step in winning the war on drugs. H.R. 3848 would require that appropriate federal reg-- . ulatory agencies revoke the efforts Jobs: Recruiting $38 billion in federal funds are distributed every year to all kinds of programs, money for schools, JTPA, Indian health, child care, social programs, reservations and urban centers. On American Indian reservations, residents will be asked to fill out the questionnaire, then hang onto it until a census taker stops by to pick it t up. Urban residents will receive a postage paid envelope along with their questionnaire and should mail their completed work in their own reservations and communities for 1990 Census jobs lasting several form weeks. English and volunteer questionnaire assistance centers will offer help to others. Every U.S. resident has something to gain from answering the Census, and absolutely nothing to lose. Personal answers to the questionnaire ' The actual count begins this month, when Census questionnaires are mailed to about 106 charter of any financial institution found quilty of knowingly accepting profits from illegal narcotics traffickers. The bill has 13 cosponsors. Annunzio says his legislation would not be directed against corporate institutions that have developed programs to detect and deter money laundering. His threat to withdraw bank charters would strengthen federal efforts to reclaim some of the illegal drug profits. An example is the settlement last month in Tampa, Florida in which a bank surLuxembourg-base- d rendered some $14 million in a plea bargain arrangement.
