Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday April 12, 1989 - Page 8 MVHS student takes first in science fair by David Campopiano A project by Nathan Roberts of Monument Valley took first place in the San Juan County District Science Fair. Roberts won in the behavorial and social science category for his project on cultural deprivation and its effects on human behavior. Eric Spotted Elk of San Juan took second in the annual fair with a mathematics project using computers. Jim Moore of Monticello placed third with a physics project, and Chuck Carroll of San Juan High took fourth with a computer science project. As first and second place winners, Roberts arid Spotted Elk qualify for an paid trip to the National Science Fair in Pittsburgh. Moore and Carroll, alternate winners, will fill in if either of the two top winners are unable to participate in the national fair. Over 100 projects from four county high schools were judged at the fair. The winner of each category received a $25 check. Judges, ten in all, came from Utah State University in Logan and Southern Utah all-expen- se State College in Cedar City. Categories and winners, in order of finish are: Behavioral and social sciences: Nathan Roberts of Monument Valley; Carol Holiday of Monument Valley; and Leta Maughan of San Juan High. Biochemistry: Aurelia Maze of Monument Valley High. Botany: Amber Shumway of San Juan; Anthony Tuitupou of Monument Valley High; Mindy Wright, San Juan High. Chemistry: Kevin Blackwater of Monument Valley; Ted Cly of Monument Valley. Computer science: Chuck Carroll of San Juan; Alan Barlow of Whitehorse; Morgan Davison of Monument Valley. Earth and space science: Lennie Benally of Monument Valley; Raynard Frank of Monument Valley; Jennifer Miller of San Juan. Engineering: John Rowley of Monticello; Curtis Rogers of Monticello; Felix Atene of Monument Valley. Environmental sciences: Elton Tuitupou of Monument Valley; Mary Rice of Whitehorse; Carter Trask of Monticello. An open house in their honor will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Monticello home of their daughter Teresa (Mrs. Eddie Barry). Hosting will be Teresa and her twenty-fift- h sister Tina. residents of San Juan County, the Risenhoovers live east of Monticello. They are the parents of four daughters; Teresa, Tina and Brendee of Monticello and Lisa (Mrs. Troy Jones) of Fort Devons, Massachusetts. Champion doggers Courtesy photo Canyon Country Cloggers finish in winners circle Cloggers from Monticello competed successfully at the Southern Utah Open Clogging championship held in Monroe, Utah. The Canyon Country Boys placed first in the intermediate line team division for their age group. The win qualifies them to participate in the National Clogging Festival to be held in Orem June 29 and 30, and July 1 and 3. The Canyon Country Girls placed third in the line team division for their age group. These cloggers are preparing to participate at the Rocky Mountain clogging competition on May 13 at Lagoon Theme Park north of Salt Lake City. Three girls placed in freestyle competition. They are: Michelle Bistryski, first; Na-taJohnson of Blanding, third; and Franki Fullmer, fifth. The Canyon Country Cloggers boys and girls teams and other cloggers will be performing Wednesday, April 26, in Monticello.
