KALAULI MARIA General Scholarship Whitehorse Foreign Language Monument Valley Southeastern Utah Deseret News Sterling Scholar competition and program March 22 East Carbon High will host the annual Southeastern Utah Deseret News Sterling Scholar competition at the College of Eastern Utah in Price on seniors March 22. Sixty-thre- e from San Juan, Carbon, Emery and Grand counties will vie for the coveted title of Sterling Scholar. The awards program is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Geary Theater. The public is invited. The program will be announced by Jerry and Kathy Logan. A challenge to the scholars will be delivered by Dr. Michael Peterson, president of CEU. A musical number will be presented by Kathleen Clark, Sterling Scholar nominee in music from Grand High. Dan Hall, the Sterling Scholar nominee in speechdrama from Carbon High, will perform a drama selection. Christine Madrid, business nominee from East Carbon High, will represent all of the scholars in giving a tribute to parents and teachers. are judged on , Nominees ' scholarship, leadership, citi zenship, and character. Each nominee prepares a personal portfolio outlining his or her scholastic and extracurricular accomplishments. In addition to the portfolio, nominees are interviewed by three judges in his or her category. A winner and two runners-u- p are selected in each category. Winners receive $250 and runners-u- p $100. Utah colleges, universities and technical schools also offer full or part tuition scholarships in specific areas. The program recognizes high school seniors for scholastic excellence in 12 categories: English, speech and drama, mathematics, social science, foreign language, science, visual arts, industrial arts, homemaking, business education, music and general scholarship. Nine secondary schools Monument Valley, Whitehorse, San Juan, Monticello, Grand County, Green River, East Carbon, Emery, and Carbon participate in the Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition.
