Show Over a sixth of the year has scurried into the pages of history and, as usual, I find it difficult to understand how it could have passed by us so quickly. Looking up see the at the Blues, I snow blanket wearing thin, its edges no longer falling loosely like a comforter around its base. I once-heav- y can wistfully hope that the remaining cover is enough to furnish the ditches and reservoirs the necessary moisture to fill the needs when the hot summer days make such great g demands for the liquid. Was the winter really as cold as it seemed to me? Oh, surely its not possible that my age is making me feel the cold more than usual, or affecting my memory to the point that past temperatures seem warmer than they were. Of course not! My age and memory have nothing to do with the situation. The greater number of calls coming in for repair of frozen water lines this year, as compared to recent previous years, attest to the fact. Our weather was cold, the low temperature difficult to life-givin- Joe Pachak recreates history at Edge of Cedars Museum. Tom Austin photo A journey in the making Images of rock art breathe new life into formerly unadorned walls at Edge of the Cedars Museum where over 100 figures will give visitors a comprehensive look into the past. Working to a master design, artist Joe Pachak is recreating the art of prehistoric cultures. His illustrations will cover the y walls of a stairwell at the museum. When he is finished, scale reproductions of rock art in the Classic Vernal, San Juan anthropomorphic, Fremont, and Dinosaur National Park styles will provide a quick study in rock art in two-stor- Utah. Chosen for their historical significance, the figures Pachak is recreating will provide a comparison of the styles and imagery of nameless rock artists of ancient cultures. These cultures include the Archiac, Basketmaker and Pueblo cultures of San Juan County. Pachak explains, One of our goals is to make accessible to people the rock art of sites now lost, such as panels covered by the waters of Lake Powell. We are recreating these panels from photographs taken during an archaeological inventory made for the Glen Canyon Project. The work Pachak does is exacting. His tools are photographs, an overhead projector, paint, a type of putty used by florists, patience, and ingen- Problems With Your Federal Taxes? uity. We had to find a way to recreate the rock art images in a manner that would not damage the walls. Also, our finished product had to be such that it could be over painted. The process Pachak employs involves painting the wall to resemble rock. He then projects a rock art image on to the wall. The image is covered with florist putty. Winston Hurst, museum curator, came up with the idea of using the putty. Soft, pliable and non oily, it peels off easily after the area surrounding the image is painted. Only a realistic reproduction of the image and the area surrounding the image satisfy Pachak. Special attention is given to capturing the subtle shades of rust, pink, brown, black and ecru common to sandstone. Pachak has a deadline to meet. It is April 10, which happens to coincide with the beginning of Archaeology Week at the museum. As Pachak toils, a handout is being prepared to explain to visitors what it is they will be looking at as they view his work. And so it is that a once dreary stairwell will become a journey into ancient history at Edge of the Cedars Museum. Wed last nite for endure. Really, though, its all relative. Compared with the temperatures in Montana, as per McSons report on his recent visit there, our weather was delightful. He called one evening to tell us that when he and his friends arose in the morning, it was 50 degrees. In a few short minutes the temperature dropped to 32 degrees, and by the time the outside chores were completed it had dropped to minus 12 (a 62 When the degree change!) temperature dropped to minus 44 degrees, a frigid gale pushed the wind chill factor to a murderous minus 107 degrees. I think Ill take our weather anytime. I knew our weather was preferable when I heard the report of the tremendous winds and impassable drifts they were experiencing in Idaho. To be snowed in for several days is not my idea of a good time. Add to that the worry of the cattlemen whose herds were freezing to death right where they stood, with their little new boms having little chance of surviving their coming out party. It sounds like a no win situation. An even worse one for the animals beset by frost bite with the devestating misery it would bring. Ive decided we live, not only in the best country in the world, but ip the best part of the country. I think Ill stay right here. Halfway there! But why it is when we have a good thing, we so often manage to come up with the negative? For instance: Its gorgeous weather, but it cant last! Of course it cant last. It isnt supposed to. Life would be pretty dull if there were no changes; and cold, hot, windy or calm, our days, and lives are filled with the things we want to fill them with. (Did I really say that?!) I enjoy the warmth and would like to have it stay around for a while. However, Ill cheer on another snow storm and welcome it with open arms, not only for the added snowpack, but to postpone the blooming of the trees to a more appropriate time when the fruit will be able to mature without danger of frost. The thought is making my mouth water already. Can you taste the crisp goodness of our apples? The luscious tenderness of the black cherries or the welcome sweetness of a fresh apricot, peach or pear? I like winter, but Im ready for spring, and summer, and fall. Of necessity I must be satisfied with the fact that To every thing there is a season, and realize that the season is now, and should be enjoyed, whichever one it might be!
