The MHS Buckaroos were downed by the Kanab Cowboys and 4 by the Dugway Mustangs in Cedar City last week. In -- their opening game on Wednesday, Monticello, a number three team from Region 13, faced Kanab, a number two team from Region 12. Going in, the Bucks were a underdog. The Bucks did open a few eyes, but in the end could not overcome the strong play of Cowboy Allen Orton, who led Kanab with 17 rebounds and 23 points. The scouting report indicated the Cowboy guard line was their strong point. The Bucks shut down this part of the Cowboy attack as Reidhead, Houston and Hafen accounted for only four, seven and six points respectively. The Bucks got off to a 74-6- 9 49-4- 15-poi- nt . cautious start. Midway in the quarter, the Bucks had closed the gap and tied the score, sparked by the output of Adams and Hugentobler. Each scored nine points in the period. Score at end of the quarter was MHS 52, KHS 55. The Bucks looked ready to overtake the Cowboys. The final period was a dog fight with the Cowboys getting the breaks when they needed them. Charley Tracy led Buck efforts with six points. Mon 74-6- 9. Thursday the Bucks challenged the Dugway Mustangs in the consolation bracket, a game they had to win to stay in contention. At the free throw line the Bucks had a 47 percent average against Kanab, who was successful on 57 percent of their foul shots.
