Honor society by Anita Shumway Hal Jensen, school superintendent, was guest speaker at the National Honor Society assembly at San Juan High School on February 7 when 21 new members of the society were introduced. Jensen commended the new members on their achievement. Admission to the society requires that a student maintain a 3.5 grade point average and that they take some specific classes. Davy Black, president, introduced each new member and the student was met on stage by lisher parents and received a in. The new members are: Vince Macunias, Collette Lyman, Sunnie Nielson, Cori Lyman, Maureen Black, Scott Paulson, Krystal Keele, Julie Eberhard, Tim Workman, Jennifer Smith, Alyse Hostler, Michael Halls, Annette Caroll, Michele Ivans, Robert Tate, Tammy Olsen, Patrice Webb, Craig Barfuss, Rachelle Shumway, Sharlynn Redd and Lisa Guymon. The purpose of National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to give service and to develop leadership and character. Extension agent hired by Carl Eisemann Ralph Home of Utah State University Extension Service told county commissioners Monday that Jim Keyes (Kis), 28, has been hired as San Juan County agricultural agent. Keyes, who speaks Navajo, will begin work April 1. He holds a master's degree in animal science from USU and has worked as an agriculture agent in Salt Lake County. Horne said USU had closed applications for the position of home economist. Several groups from Bluff and Mexican Hat performed versions of the students in a Yei-bi-ch- ai Cultural awareness celebrated in Bluff by Alvin Reiner For the past few weeks the halls of the Bluff Elementary School have reverberated with drum beats and echoed with chants. During recesses and lunch breaks, light footed dancers shuffled and high stepped to the rhythms in preparation for Bluffs annual ei dance and feather dances. The Bluff dancers were under the direction of Daisy Buck, Ed and Lucy McKelvey, Ester Reddoor, Jewel Yanito and Patricia Washington. Their Mexican Hat counterparts were guided dance which can only be performed a Reiner photo when the snakes and lizards have gone to sleep for the winter Bluff kindergarten Yei-bi-ch- by Eleanor Mose and Lupita Harrison. The White Mesa Utes shared their talents and colorful traditional costuming for several dances and songs, as youngperformed by school-ag- e sters and senior citizens. The San Juan Indian Club departed from traditional culture to present numerous Air Shows in which they tried to with modem music. The Bluff Elementary School thanks all the traditional singers and dancers from White Mesa and Mexican Hat for their participation. The school also appreciates the work of Baxter and Dora Benally, Jack and Marie Etcitty and others who helped with the decorations. Culture Day. The- - festivities commenced with a venison stew and Navajo dinner provided by the Bluff Elementary School kitchen staff as well as donations from several parents. fry-brea- d crowd of several hundred was jammed into the room, A standing-room-onl- y multi-purpos- e Ogden receives award from SCS Allen Ogden, soil conservationist for the Soil Conservation Service of Monticello, has accepted a position with the SCS in Roosevelt, Utah as a resource conservation and development coordinator. Ogden has served in the Moab and Monticello area for over 10 years. Six of those years as district conservationist and four as soil conservationist. Prior to coming to Monticello, he worked in Roosevelt, Price, Manti and Kanab. He has been employed by the SCS for 17 years. Ogden was instrumental in influencing farmers and ranchers to install conservation practices that were a benefit to them and the community. Over 90 miles of terraces were between and constructed, 50,000 and 60,000 acres of brush control and seeding were completed while he was working in Monticello. Ogden received a Certificate of merit and a cash avard at the Lake City on January 24, 1986. The award was presented for sustained superior performance and for all of his duties as a soil conservationist, and for outstanding work performance in two special ACP project areas.
