Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday February 26, 1986 - Page by Guy Wallace Conservation Officer The 1986 fishing proclama- tions are now available at all hunting and fishing license agents. Although there are no significant changes in statewide regulations, there are some changes in local waters of which anglers should be aware. The size restriction on stripers at Lake Powell (only two fish over 30 inches) has been removed, but the bag limit remains at 10. This means that in 1986 you can catch 10 stripers regardless of size. Loyds Lake, the new resevoir near Monticello, has been listed as South Creek Resevoir in the new proclamation and will be closed during 1986. The Division of Wildlife Resources will stock the resevoir this spring with rainbow and cutthroat trout fingerlings, and the closure will allow these fish to grow to be a nice catchable size by 1987. Anglers who brave the cold and try their hand at ice fishing should keep in mind a few rules of thumb about the possible dangers of walking on ice: 1. New ice is stronger than old ice. 2. Slush ice (white frosty looking ice) is only about half as strong as clear blue ice. 3. River ice is 4. considerably ice. lake weaker than Continuous travel over the same route across ice will tend to weaken it. 5. Ice may have weak spots in area of currents or springs. The following thickness guide should be used to judge ice strength: Two inches of ice will gener- ally support one adult of average size on foot. Three inches of ice will support a small group of people, providing they walk in single file and remain well spaced. Ice over 12 inches thick will usually support the weight of a car. The Utah Division of Wildlife urges winter anglers to be aware of the dangers inherent in snowmobiling or walking across ice and to always use extreme caution and good judgement when venturing out on ice. A cancelled game and a Monument Valley victory over Green River gave the Southern Division Region 13 Championship to the Buckaroos and assured the Monticello team a seeding in the 1 A state playoffs. Losing out were the Whitehorse Raiders, who were in violation of Region 13 athletic policy as established by the Board of Policy Managers, an organization of all Region 13 high school principals. Policy set by the Board provides for 16 games for each region high school and requires varsity teams to forfeit any game(s) they play over and pre-tourname- above the 16 allowable games. The situation last week required the Raiders to forfeit to the Buckaroos. The win gives Monticello a regular season and region record of overall. The team to beat in the region playoffs this weekend in Price is Duchesne. The Bucks and the Green River Pirates are considered serious challengers, with Monticello having gained credence from their strong showing in a recent battle with the San Juan Broncos. 4-- 2 rent this Four-bedroo- by Angelyn Adams Excellent shooting by Jens Nielson and David Lee accounted for 48 percent of the Bronco regional points in their basketball win over the Juab W asps.
