When her father was called to serve an LDS mission in England, Caroline was forced to withdraw from the eighth grade to help support the family. Work was accepted wherever die could find it, generally in the form of odd jobs and sewing for financially more , secure families. , the death of her father, Caroline assisted in the completion of a small rock house A short time later in Bluff. she moved with her mother into a framed lumber tent in Blanding (then called Grayson). There she continued to struggle for income, selling meals to transients and cooking for her Unde Walter C. Lymans sawmiU crew. On December 20, 19U, at the age of 21, Caroline married Hanson D. Bayles in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They ultimately established themselves in a new house on what is now the comer of Second South and Main Streets in Blanding, where die raised seven children. The home became a focal point of neighborhood activity, and children throughout Blanding came to know her affectionately as Aunt FoUowing CAROLINE BA YLES Caroline Lyman Bayles passed away quietly inher home inBland-in- g on June 21, 1984, at the age of 94. Her friends and relatives assembled to pay final tribute in the Blanding South chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints on June 25, in services conducted by Bishop Lloyd H. Bayles. Those in Blanding who didnt know her as Mama, or knew her affecGrandma, Aunt DoUy. These tionately as few words of tribute can hardly express the loss to those who knew and loved her. Caroline Lyman was bom May 13, 1890, inScipio, Millard County, Utah, the ninth and youngest child of Platte D. Lyman and Adelia Robison. She spent her childhood and adolescence in Bluff, Utah DoHy. In 1924, herpeace was shattered by the horror of retrieving the lifeless body of her beautiful. dark-eye- d, old eighteen-mon- th daughter Mildred from the waters of a nearby ditch, an experience whose trauma she carried until her years later. own death 60 Her life was disrupted again in 1946 when she lost her husband to complications from lingering pneumonia. Caroline Bayles was a paragon of stability and strength, whose quiet loyalty to her faith and her family impressed them selves upon all who knew her. The four decades of life foUowing the loss of her husband were spent in. constant activity and service to others, assisting in the raising of her grandchildren, making and giving away exquisite quilts, and improving her lovely yard. She enjoyed hard work, considering it to be her recreation, hi church activities she served both the living and the dead, serving an LDS Stake mission, teaching in the church auxiliaries, and sewing for and dressing the dead for interment. Caroline Lyman Bayles was preceded in death by her hu&and and two children, Mildred and Reed E. She is survived by her children Carol (Hurst), Francis L., Margaret (Taylor), Marian, Platte D., Hnascn L 30 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchild- and 13 , took the time to visit with our mother in the later, years of her life.
