A mile-lon- g, 12.5 kilovolt power line has been extended to the Todakaidekani Head Start Center and a nearby water pumping station after years of negotiations and budget requests from the Navajo Nation. The project, which cost $24,315. used nearly 18,000 feet of wire and 26 poles to extend the line to the center. The Todahaidekani Center, 12 miles south of Bluffj is one of six centers operated by the Utah Navajo Development Council (UNDC). Community members of the Mexican Water Chapter, one of 109 chapters on the Navajo Reser- vation, asked the Tribe for assistance on the project through UNDC. A second proposal, seeking funds for electricity for a water pumping station and the center, was successful. However, a administration in tribal change and other chapter, priorities de- layed the project. According to Karolyn Romero, UNDC Chapter relations officer, the efforts of the Mexican Water and of several key Chapter individuals have made the difference in getting the project completed. "There have been numerous contacts made and negotiations conducted by people who have gone the extra mile, said Romero. According to chapter officials, it will be the first time a reliable source of electricity will be available in the community, ending years of intermitent power sigpplied by a small gas generator. According to UNDC Education Director Jim Benally, the new power lines will improve the Head Start program there. "The powerline will enable the Center to fully utilize electrical apand audio visual pliances said Benally. He equipment, said the Center also will have full use of its kitchen facilities es for storing meat, fruit and used in the Head Start lunch program. Benally says the Center also will be used in the evenings to hold workshops, parent meetpublic gatherings and ings, veg-tabl- holiday parties. Clah sees the installation power lines as a means of of de- veloping water and housing projects in the community. "The electricity will operate a pumping station near the center that will pump water from a recently installed-150,00gallon tank to homes in the area. We recently installed bathroom and kitchen additions for about half of the 49 families living here, who will be able to have running water for the first time, said Clah. Dr. Dennis A.
