The most hopeful alternative at the moment is an amendment to empower county commissioners to designate areas where local option voting can be allowed. . Such an amendment is possible only if it can be written so that it will not be challenged in the j J HB 48, my bill for local precinct option beer sales in Utah, was sent to the Senate Business Committee where it received mixed response with three senators expressing opposition. Calvin Rampton and Robert Wright, , representing Utah beer have spoken out wholesalers, the bill against The Utah Retail Grocers Association has hired an attorney to oppose the bill. The concern of those who take exception to HB 48 is that citizens in areas of the state other than southern San Juan County will be tempted by majority vote not to have beer sold in their area. Sagebrush Lady I sat long at my typewriter, hammering the keys, I thought, I am not tired, but oh my aching knees. No matter, I must finish this, courts, HB 48 must receive a favorable report from the Senate Business Committee before it can go to the Senate. At the moment the outlook for HB 48 is rather bleak. The Public Education Appropriation Committee has completed appropriation designations but there is not yet agreement on funding. It appears that funding wiU most likely be the same as 1932 $1103 per student. before the day is done. . Although I really love my job. Pm not doing it for fun. Local businessmen have not kept pace with market demand which is chiefly why $5 million has to be spent outside the area each year. It is not difficult to see the reasons. Blandings broad con- - . sumer population doesnt have much selection in non-foitems. It is very difficult if not impossible to buy shoes, clothing; fur' niture, or appliances here in town except through mail order catalogues where results are often chancey. When major shopping is necessary for most everyone in the communitythe people of Blanding have been compelled to go where they have better choices, and that, unfortunately, has been far from Blanding. Other things are makingpeople . uneasy. Emerging oligopolists among local gasoline retailers are causing an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust to be spread over buinesses in San Juan County by consumers. Upon being asked when gasoline prices will come down in Blanding; a local gasoline retailer replied; Probably od . never. trary, sufficient room will be left for other food retailing businessmen to remain open and compete with Safeway. Those not able to compete would have the opportutheir nity to adapt, j and gn to nonthe businesses develop food market which is needed crire-ali- tically here. The charge that Safeway will drive out all other competitors then raise its prices is not weU founded. Safeways success here depends upon its ability to attract a large number of customers who do not normally come to Blanding to shop, but go to Cortez, .. Farmington, etc. To draw those customers and keep them means that Safeway would have to maintain compari-tiv- e or loose their ' business.prices Besides, Safeway m ns a fairly uniform price schedule throughout Utah. Prices Safeway customers pay in Salt Lake City wouldbe about the same as those paid in Blanding. Overall, the market conditions would improve in Blanding with the coming of Safeway and the public interest, along with the interests of Blanding consumer population wouldbe served. Anew ain-tai- -- task of mine And I concluded that time to rest, is of every remedy the best. A very long time ago when dear little kids clobbered every hour of my day, I had just begun the Society President. Onepoorlittle marketplace will benefit everyone. Many who oppose it now will probably concede, and eventually come to see its value. The changes, which were proposed by the House Democratic Caucus, were passed basically vote. by a party-li- ne R. and L. Jarvis quite a mess. I took the crying baby and told the mother to go and clean up her bedroom and then climb in the tub for a good soak. After the bath she was to put on a pretty dress and do her hair. She looked at me like I was crazy but I assured her that I would tend the baby while she , was busy. Almost as soon as I took the child he stopped crying. I hung him around my neck like a shawl, leaving my arms free to do the dishes. Before they were done, the weary little one was asleep. I felt that his mothers distraction had upset him more than his colic. At any rate, the baby stayed asleep while I finished the kitchen. . About that time the mother came out looking cool and refreshed and also feeling much better. I told her to go and lie down while the baby slept and she 'would soon have the world by the tail again. , This mother had made a point of working on and on to the point of exhaustion. How on earth did she figure she ' could gather, sufficient recuperation to carry on and take care of her family? My years have taught me that unless we carefully set aside some time for ourselves, nobody does it for us, and we may never get it. . It is very possible to go through all our days hanging on for dear - life to the end of our string. It is NOT selfish to care about ones self, but it is dam foolish not to. tives. Under the headline, New Gag in House, the House Rules passed changes in its internal rules on the first day that will let the politicians shirk their basic Constitutional responsibilities. The new rules will also give Speaker of the House Tip ONeiU and other liberals far greater control to pass or reject legislation. Rep. Trent called the new rules, a new profile in cowardice. Why did customers in San Juan County pay 72 cents a pound . for turkey last Thanksgiving when 47 cents was paid up north? The coming of Safeway will probably not affect the price of gasoline, but it wiU impact favorably on the business community as a whole. It has the potential to attract several hundred new shoppers into Blanding each week who normally wouldnt come otherwise. An economic spillover into other local businesses is anticipated, which will mean new profits for many. in spite of arguments to the con- - . , breakfast dishes when Aunt Kiss came along and assured me that if I would go with her on some errands, enjoying the walk in the bright sun, I would feel ever so much better when I came back. The two little boys were in school and I took the two tiny girls with me as we walked. It was fun and we got back in time to fix lunch for the children. The rest of the day I enjoyed that walk and heard, in my mind, the meadowlarks singing again and again. It seems that I was able to accomplish just as much as I would have done if I had not taken that little time to enjoy myself.
