In this time for equal r ights , Discuss Sand Island fence By Marsha Keele The Bureau of Land Management met with citizens of Bluff last week at Recapture Lodge to discuss the fencing off of Sand Island. Bluff citizens earlier had signed a petition asking that a BLM constructed fence be removed from the popular picnic spot. Their main complaint, according the C lemma Arthur of Bluff, was having to carry picnic baskets, and firewood into the area, as the road had been blocked off to traffic. Jerry Ballard of the BLM office in Monticello said the BLM was concerned about damage to trees in the area and wearing away of other vegetation by campers and other vehicles. Sand Island is one of the few white water areas on the San Juan River, where approximately 50 - 60 per cent of boat launching takes place in the area. The fenced area was designated as a picnic area, with camping for all, I demand equal rights for male turkeys. While listening to an advertisement for the store with more in Monticello, it stated that female turkeys were going for 73 cents a pound, while their male counterparts retailed for a measly 67 cents. So all out you Gobbler Steinems let your voices be there, heard! The Bluff Recreation committee met with Bruce Shum-wa- y, A1 Haskins and Notah Tahy concerning funds available to finish the basketball court in the new multi - purpose building. Before the building can be utilized, plywood paneling will have to be installed to protect the walls. In addition, user fees were discussed but nothing was decided upon.
