Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD, Thursday, November, 3, 197 r, Page 2 Monticello parties list candidates Both the Independent and Progressive Parties in Mont- icello are entering full slates of candidates for the positions open in the biennial city election next Tuesday, Novem- ber 8. The Independent Party candidates are Gary Adair for mayor, and Grant Nielson and Jack Young for city council-men. Mr. Adair has been on the staff at Monticello HighSchool seven years and is currently a counselor. He previously three taught years inNewport, Oregon. He is a native of Cedar City, Utah, and was reared in Pa-naNevada. He served an LDS mission in Texas and New Mexico and was in the service two and h half years, in Texas and overseas in Gerca, many. His year included a schooling and a half at Brigham Young University and six years at the University of Utah. His principal fields of study included Spanish, German and educational psychology. His wife is Beverly T. Adair, and they have four children, Jeff, Heidi,' John and Amy. In commenting on his candidacy for mayor, Mr. Adair said: I would like to provide the type of leadership wherein problems within the city could be settled through calm and open discussions with concerned citizens, thereby getting ideas from everyone to keep Monticello a fine place to live." Grant Nielson is a candidate for councilman on the Independent Party ticket. He is a native of Monticello, the fifth child of Bernice and the late Clyde Nielson. During his early life in Monticello he held several positions of service and leadership. In 1964-6- 5 he served a mission in England, and he has earned several hours in business administration from LDS Business College, Mesa Community College and Brigham Young University. Mr. Nielson has worked in Monticello and Mesa, Arizona, in the electrical business, most of the time as partner with his brother Stephen. In 1974 he and his family moved to Monticello from Mesa because of his desire to rear his family in a smaller community. I feel my family has many advantages by living in Monticello that were not available in a city, the candidate said. I want very much to help in any way possible to serve you and help make Monticello a better place to live and to raise your families. I believe that the only way we can accomplish this is by having a x good mayor and five good individuals on the council who wiU work together in realizing the city's problems and doing something to improve them. I believe I will fit m well with the working council we now have. I would appreciate your vote on November 8. Jack Young has lived in Monticello 21 years and is a 1962 graduate of Monticello High School. He has been associated many years with Young's Machine Company and is now vice president of the company. Commenting on his candi- dacy, Mr. Young said: "As a councilman the past four years, I feel that I have at least partly accomplished what I have wanted to do. The water problem has been one of v my main projects, and although we Jiave v made progress in overcoming this major problem, I feel we have a long way yet to go, and this is one of the reasons I am seeking so I can continue to work on this problem and other projects which we have started; a new lagoon system, revision of the ordinances, especiaUy the zoning and re-'elect- others see I would like to fin- ished. Jack has served on several committees and organizations in the community, including the board of the North San Juan Recreation Committee. He and his wife, Jessie, have three children, Troy, Shari and Jodi. The Progressive Party's candidates include Keith Redd for mayor and Hal Jensen and Harold Young for councilmen. Keith Redd, the Progressive Party's nominee for mayor, has been a city councilman the past two years. Keith is a native ofBlanding and attended Utah State University, earning a degree in business administration. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps with a combat crew of bombers assigned to the 8th Air Force B-- 24 in England. believes that the Monticello has potential to be a more beautiful pleasant place to live through proper ment. Harold C. Young, candidate for councilman, is a lifelong He resident of Monticello. Monticello from graduated High School in 1948 and went on to the University of Southern California at San Luis Obispo, where he studied engineering. Harold is the president of Young Builders, Inc., a general building construction business which he operates with two of his sons. Mr. Young has served in numerous civic and church positions and is now a member of the Presidency of the Monticello Third Ward Elders Quorum. A former city councilman in Monticello, Harold also has served as a member of the San Juan County commission. He says he wants to return to city government to help make Monticello a better community. Hal Jensen has been a resident of Monticello for 6 12 years. He was raised in California where he lived for 30 years. He worked in building construction and peach farming as well as teaching school. He has been a teacher and school administrator in California, the Pacific Islands, and Monticello for 18 years. He was recently appointed assistant superintendent of schools in San Juan County, after six years as principal of the Monticello Elementary School. Hal and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of six children. He has served as a county and a state delegate for the Republican Party as well as precinct chairman in Monticello. He has served as chairman of the San Juan District, Boy Scouts of America, and in other teaching and administrative church assignments, He served a mission for the LDS Church in New Zealand, and spent 2 years in the U.S. Army.
