The other project discussed, although more distantly scheduled, is the Building of a bridge across Montezuma Creek, as well as a road running from Bluff to Colorado's McElmo Canyon road, which is also slated for improvement. The purpose of thos project is twofold: First, to provide an adequate road system between the Utah communities of Bluff, Aneth and Montezuma Creek. With the building of a high school in Montezuma Creek, a good road will be needed even more than at present. Second, to furnish an alternate route for tourists traveling from Arizona to points in southwestern Colorado, such as Mesa Verde and Cortez. by Alvin Reiner Wednesday, September 24, four officials from the Utah Department of Transportation visited Bluff to give a status report on proposed projects in the area. Two projects discussed were the straightening of Cow C anyon, and the eventual building of a decent road from Bluff to the Colorado border. Cow Canyon, through which Route 163 passes just north of Bluff, contains sharp curves and a steep grade. It has been the site of several accidents in recent years. Plans caUing for a reduction of the aforementioned hazards, as well as the possible construction of a truck lane, will be discussed at a November meeting in Bluff. The Cow Canyon improvement is part of a road project which will run from Bluff to Butler Wash, and should commence during the summer of 1976. The transportation officials feel a medium standard road would fit the requirements of utility and stability, as well as being aesthetically pleasing.
