Show Congressman Burton Park visits in state up 12 Reports from Washington Last week was the week of the student here in Washington. Never in my eight years in Congress, or in the memories of those that have been here longer than I, have so many young people thronged the Capitol and called upon their Congressmen. The students who visited my 0 ffice have been intelligent, articulate, for the most part ed and all have been well informed. They share two things in common--a- ll were honestly and deeply concerned about being heard by those in authority in government and all have an abiding apprehension about the present conflict in Southeast Asia. They are sincerly and legitimately concerned over the direction the country is taking and what they can do to have a voice in diaping the ' nations policies. Frankly, I have been impressed with the students who met with me. They wanted me to know how they felt about a lot of things.- Cambodia and Kent State in particular, and they wanted to know how I felt about the matters which bothered them. The mutual e exchange of ideas was enlightening and helpful to me and I hope, to them. 1 was in Utah during the weekend demonstration of students on the Ellipse here in Washington, but my staff people who observed say that, for the most part, the entire affair was orderly and reasonably free from violence. In this, I feel the students rate a plus for their conduct. Where they really made their point, however, was in the vast visit to their Congressional representatives. Now, I am sure that all of them will agree to this. They did not hear what they wanted to hear from many of us in Congress. The important thing was that they were taking positive, constructive steps in attempting to do what many of us have long urged them to try work for their cause within the political system to make their views known and their influence felt, rather than resorting to violent means which result in death destruction and more, rather less, misunderstandings and loss of communications. If I were to fault in any respect those who talked to me, it would be to observe that they feel they are the only ones concerned about Cambodia and Vietnam and that the approach they advocate is the only approach that t will work. All of us, from President Nixon on down, want to end the war in Vietnam. The Administration is working hard to win peace and they feel they are making well-dress- - 26,000 in 1969. It is a prime . I beleive, and so told the students, that the President is completely sincere and absolutely dedicated to securing a responsible peace in Asia as speedily as possible. The problem is, the majority of the students so not seem to beleive this. I was impressed with the political awareness of these young people. The major contingents of Utah students one of Yale and one from the University of Utah met with me.
