Show Special season sought for big game hunting Park in Nat'l Senator Frank E. Moss (D) is directing a campaign to open special hunting seasons in the National Fark areas of Utah as the most effective and humane means of regulating deer and elk herds. The senator has recently conferred with Conrad L. Wirth, Director of the National Park Service, and Director Harold Crane of the Utah State Fish and Game Commission on the question. Moss emphasized that Utah was suffering a severe water shortage which makes it doubly necessary to conserve forage and prevent any unusual expansion of wild animal herds. He called attention to the experience of the deer herd e that was allowed to the Kiabab plateau in southern Utah. Hunting was prohibited in thi3 area and the large and herd became so plentiful that even an excellent food supply could not accomodate them. They fought with each other for available forage; thousands died of starvation and the survivors degenerated into small and scrawny remnants of the once outstanding s' 'vH , A in empty for a change. How long it and thousands of others remain depends upon how soon the entire nation is fully vaccinated against polio. empty Almost half the U. S. is unguarded against 'pppw-p- on crippling polio. Basil OConnor, president of The National Foundation, has described the vulnerability of some 85 million Americans to paralyti disgrace.1 There Salk and withi provide of protection against polio outbreaks and epidemics in the summer. In thousands of cities, villages and hamlets across the nation, Salk polio vaccination is available at little cost, and in some communities the prescribed series of at least three shots is free. A fourth booster shot is now recommended. r The individuals common 5, sense and will to survive should dictate immediate vac'? cination, Mr. OConner said. If he or she has a family, all 'i the more urgent ground for polio protection.' The National Foundation has been joined in its nationwide ! ,fr appeal to the unvaccinated by the American Medical Associa- ion and the U S. With this example before us, Moss said, we can see that the most humane and sensible course is to keep animal herds in check. Director Wirth of the State Fish and Game Commission goes along with Senator Moss ideas. He says that predatory animals such as the wolf and mountain lion are no longer effective controls in maintaining a balance between the herds of elk and deer and their natural food supply.
