Nevertheless, it is suspected that tularemia might be the cause. It is not at all unusual for tularemia (rabbit fever) to disseminate rabbit colonies Tularemia may occur in any month of the year, but the incidence in Utah seems to reach its peak during the winter and spring season. The incidence coincides more or less wnth the hunting season and other activities that take place during these months. The contact is made with the causative Bacterium organism, tularense, generally through handling of infected animals- as in skinning, dressing , or ingestion of insufficiently cooked animals. The bites of infected ticks and flies and drinking contaminated water may lead to infection also. Care should be exercised in handling rabbits and other wild life- - as it is estimated that about 1 of these animals are infected with tularemia.
