Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Thursday, Fab. 18, 1954 Page The Old Settler . . . Intercepted Letter (Continued from Page 1) the boy, it is a one sided and unfair process. Some very superior children simply have no place in their systems for the convention al school: they are not built that way, and it is a cruel system which undertakes to revamp them to the shape and measure-- , ments of the herd. A great lot of stuff is forced upon them which they do not want and will not accept. It may be something they really need and will in due time desire and learn. The fathers and mothers are Natures teachers. If they are what they ought to be, they can teach more valuable lessons than any paid teacher. This is not say ing the paid teacher is not needed to supplement what the par-et- s can and ought to teach. A boy went from a remote, rural home to the city and got a job, and he did his work so well that his employer asked him if he had any brothers. Yes, he did two of them, and in time they were sent for and became trusted and efficient helpers in two other firms. These employers were so pleased with their boys from the backwoods, that they made a trip to see the mother of the boys, a widow, who made her living and raised her children on what they could make by working long and hard on a little farm. They asked her how she had trained her boys to be the me fellows that they had proved to be. The mother, a plain, uneducated woman answered frankly. I taught them to work, to be honest and to say their prayers." AlDert R. Lyman Justice Court cases tried before W. C. The irferenee from this report is that the Monticello car was travelling at a high rate of speed and was the car which was responsible for the crash. Investigation of the facts of the case show's that this report and the inference of the report are entirely false. The Monticello car was driven by one of the fac ulty members of the Monticello High school ahd was the middle car of a caravan of three cars loaded with Monticello high stu who had dents and teachers been sent with the students as supervisors. The caravan was traveling at a rate not to exceed fifty miles per hour and was observing as much safety precautions as posible and yet be on the highway. Investigation shows that the other car involved in the collision, was traveling at a high sate of speed and as it topped a rise in the road which also involved a turn, was unable to make the turn and swerved into the lane of the approaching Monticello car. Walter Svedin, the driver of the Monticello car, was helpless to do anything except apply his brakes, which he did an instant before the crash. We wish you to know that we here at Monticello and at school are thoroughly convinced that the teachers involved were carry ing out their assigned responsibility in an efficient manner and were observing the rules of safety and are in no way oc-to blame for the accident which curred. Unfortunately, few of you ever try it The consensus seems to be that picture stories lie entirely in the realm of the experienced professional. As far as Im concerned, this argument doesnt hold water. Anyone who can take a good single picture can shoot a good picture story. The photographic technique remains the tame. It just takes a little more thought and planning. The first thing to decide is if the subject you are planning to photograph is a good and Interesting subject to begin with. This may seem elementary, but its surprising how much valuable photographic time is wasted on subjects which have no intrinsic interest and which no amount of excellent photography can make anything but dull.
