The job can be made easier and safer by the use of these and other simple and compara- tively inexpensive precautions: stout corrals, good loading chutes: chutes for restraint when treating, proper tools for t treating, and corrals and yards that are clean and free from boards, nails, equipment, wire, . etc. 7 he agent sajs a good rule of thumb might be that if a pro-- 1 ducer can walk straight through his corral without detouring for unusual things, can handle his livestock without injuring them or himself, and can do this wnth out losing his temper, then his ! equipment is adequate. Good equipment for handling livestock is cheap insurance for both the producer and for his stock. This is a simple but very important factor in livestock production. Why is good equipment so important? The reasons are: 1. To save human life and limb. 2.- To reduce livestock bruise and death losse. 3. To make livestock handling a pleasant task Stories of bulls trampling and goring men are often played up m the papers, but how many cases arms and broken legs, ribs or serious bruises resulting from livestock handling never reach the pages of the newspapers, the countv agents asks. Almost every one who has spent time on a farm has been kicked, bitten or otherwise injured while handling animalsvic-of many types. Most of those tims, Mr. Rudd says, will recall that there was a definite cause for the accident and that could have been avoided by Some avoidable accidents are trying to catch and treat an animal in a big corral where obstacles are present, dehorning without protection or secure tying and to load or unload livestock with a pitchfork and no loading chute. Simple jobs become dangerous when proper equipment isnt available. Injury is not always confined to people involved. Cattle and other animafs often suffer hip and leg injuries, bruises and other damage. These accidents affect the producer's pocketbook directly, the county agent points out. Livestock losses from bruising of cattle alone resulted in a national average loss of nearly $7.00 per head last year. A Denver packing company representative recently told a large group of producers that they were losing money through pure carelesness. The group was told that packers cannot pay the same amount for. bruised or broken animals as for those in good condition. Livestock production is a real proper equippleasure if the ment is on hand.
