"Are you go ing to the dogs?" is a common ex pression heard today in Rome, since Countess Dorothy Dentlce di Fraso, the former Dorothy Taylor of New York, and her husband, Count Carlo, instituted the new sport of dog racing in Italy. Lately an interesting race was run between Only two dogs,' Countess Prasso's dog "Sleeper" and Duke Torlonia's dog "Bravour." Countess Dorothy's dog had a hard run and won just by a head. $12,253,000,000 Total. By FRANK L WELLER, Associated Press Farm Editor. WASHINGTON (). Despite uneven spots rarely escaped in an industry as large and varied a the ag riculture of the United States, most farming enterprises are authoritatively declared to have experienced an upward trend in 1927-2Secretary Jardine says the situation was perhaps less difficult than in any year since 1920. The current marketing season ' still ha some months to run, and what the gross Income of agriculture a a whole will be is undetermined. However, from the best available evidence, production cost have not been larger than a year ago and may have been somewhat smaller. This, together with prospects that the gross income will be larger, leads the secretary to believe there may be at least a proportionate increase in net income. , t More Revenue Than Last Year. Latest figures relate to the crop In that year the gross year 1927-2income of American agriculture from all products amounted to $12,253,- 000,000, compared with $12,127,000,000 8. Despite the increase, greater demand abroad is expected to keep prices more or less favorable. Amer- icas share in the world s output of j. wheat, unlike cotton, does not give this country a determining influence on the price of the crop. It depends on the total world production. The corn crop is estimated at about 2,900,000,000 bushels, the larg- est crop since 1923. In proportion to the number of livestock on the farms the output la fairly large and is ex- pectsd to stimulate livestock produc- tlon. . A scarcity of corn and other In Europe has been a factor in maintaining relatively good prices for corn through the past season and is expected to be a factor In the situation for the coming season. Estimates for buckwheat, rice and bean, crops show a production less than last year, although sufficient for current needs. Fruit production was heavier than last year, but less than in 1938. Potato production made a record. Possibly 15. per cent of the supply will be utilized as feed for livestock or wasted. Tobacco and Sweet Spud Output Down. Sweet potatoes were a light crop. Other vegetables were grown oti an increased acreage, but gave rather light yields. Tobacco, planted oh an increased acreage, was harvested in rather low yields, so that the crop in weight J not above normal requirements. General improvement in the livestock industry.
