Editor Commissioner Drew Sitterud thanked Commissioner Gary Kofford in the recent commission meeting for the work that has been done on the upcoming Emery County Fair. Commis- sioner Sitterud also commented on the recent public lands meeting saying it was a good meeting and that he appreciates lands council does fpr the county. He said that they had received a call from Washington and Senator Mark Cdall is trying to amend the Interior Appropriations bill. The Mark Cdall Ammendmenl would pre-ethe Hush Administration from allow ing'eounties to claim jurisdiction over dirt roads and old roadbeds on public lands, 7 is the roads. not an opening of new roads nl RS-247- ICS-24- across untracked wilderness as is claimed by the environmentalist moumient. It carries out a provision of the Federal Land Policy Management Act of l!)7(i which allows local governments to claim rights of way to existing roads. but prohibits establishment of new roads without going through the proper channels and procedures. Commissioner Kofford said that the fair committee has done a great job and that all thanks and accolades should go to them. The fair will officially kick-of- f with the Miss Emery Scholarship Pageant on July IS and will run through August !). The San Rafael Pro Rodeo will be held on duly 2.V2(i. The fair committee said they are getting a lot of response from booth renters and vendors with a lot of people who want to bring booths in. The kids day at the fair will be Aug. S. A tractor show will also be held with 0 old tractors comingto town. A Scottish group is also coming to the city park. The fair will feature two stages, one at the museum and one at the fair park and if you miss a performance at the fair you can see a repeat performance at the museum stage. There will be wagons which shuttle people from the 20-3- museum to the fair park throughout the fair. Commissioner Kofford also said that PacifiCorp has released to DOOM a report on findings at Electric Lake. Commissioner Kofford also said that the Carbon County Commission would have a report of their own ready by Oct. 1. That report will indicate that an aquifer of a considerable size is under Electric Lake. They feel that the water migration problem has been taken care of by the drilling of James Canyon one well. The county has a copy of the Electric Lake report that is available for public review. Commissioner Ira Hatch reported on the travel bureau meeting they had in Green River. He said that they were given a report on the information center within the CElT museum and that visitation is down. Scenic Byway activities are coming up with a triathlon and biathlon in Scofield and Huntington Canyon on July 11). A stargazing activity will be held at the turnoff to the Millers Flat Road on Aug 1 at dusk. Don Burge vv ill conduct the session and those coming are invited to bring binoculars and telescopes if they have access to them. Burge will explain astrology and answer any questions stargazers have. Commissioner Hatch also reported attending meetings with Kris Bell, county assessor and Commissioner Sitterud on the centrally assessed properties. A public relations firm had contracted to compile a report on centrally assessed and their report indicated that it is going down and that locally assessed tax burdens are increasing. The public relations firm was pressured to drop the study, which they did but the report was still made available for use. Commissioner Hatch said the information they gathered at the meetings would be useful in dealing with centrally assessed tax issues. He also mentioned that thing's are not resolved with I 'tah Bovver and their tax protests and it is a continuing issue. News Tips? The two and a half month old colt can be taken home or it can stay with its mother at the ranch until the time it is weaned. It will be a lot of fun to see who ends up with this valuable colt. Local cowboys will also be participating in the rodeo. Justin Carter is a calf roper from Green River, Will Day no is a bull rider from Cleveland. Chuck Rich is a bareback rider from Cleveland, Buck Taylor is a bull rider from Huntington, Brock Truman is a calf roper from Huntington, Justin Truman is a calf roper from Huntington and is also the 2002 defending calf roping champion of the San Rafael Pro Rodeo. The overall purse for the rodeo will top $35,000 and were pretty happy about that significant amount of change for the participants.
