Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday July 22, 2003 3A R0d 60 Commissioner Reports By PATSY STODDARD, Editor Commissioner Drew Sitterud thanked Commissioner Gary Kofford in the recent commission meeting for the work that has been done on the upcoming Umery County Fair. Commissioner Sitterud also commented on1 the recent public lands meeting saying it was a good meeting and that he appreciates everything the lands council does for the county. He said that they n had received a call from and Senator Mark Udall is trying to amend the Interior Appropriations bill. The Mark tidall Ammendment would prevent the Bush Administration from allowing counties to claim jurisdiction over dirt roads and old roadbeds on public lands, the 7 is roads. riot an opening of new roads across untracked wilderness as is claimed by the environmentalist movement. It carries out a provision of the Federal Land Policy Management Act of 1976 which allows local governments to claim rights of way to existing roads, but prohibits establishment of new roads without going through the proper channels and procedures. Commissioner Kofford said that the fair committee has done a1 great job and that all thanks and accolades should go to them. The fair will officially kick-of- f with the Miss Emery Scholarship Pageant on July 18 and will run through August 9. The San Rafael Pro Rodeo will be. held on July The fair committee said they are getting a lot of response from booth renters and vendors with a lot of people who want to bring booths in. The kids day at the fair will be Aug. 8. A tractor show will also be held with 0 old tractors coming to town. A Scottish group is also coming to the city park. The fair will feature two stages, one at the museum and one at the fair park and if you miss a performance at the fair you can see a repeat performance at the museum stage. There will be wagons which shuttle people from the ' Wash-lrigto- RS-24- RS-247- ; 25-2- museum to the fair park throughout the fair. Commissioner Kofford also said that PacifiCorp has released to DOGM a report on findings at Electric Lake. Commissioner Kofford also said that the Carbon County Commission would have a report of their own ready by Oct. 1. That report will indicate that an aquifer of a considerable size is under Electric Lake. They feel that the water migration problem has been taken care of by the drilling of James Canyon one well. The county has a copy of the Electric Lake report that is available for public review. Commissioner Ira Hatch reported on the travel bureau meeting they had in Green River. He said that they were given a report on the information center within the CEU museum and that visitation is down. Scenic Byway activities are coming up with a triathlon and biathlon in Scofield and Huntington Canyon on July 19. A stargazing activity will be held at the turnoff to the Millers Flat Road on Aug. 1 at dusk. Don Burge will conduct the session and those coming are invited to bring binoculars and telescopes if they have access to them. Burge will explain astrology and answer any questions stargazers have. Commissioner Hatch also reported attending meetings with Kris Bell, county assessor and Commissioner Sitterud on the centrally as- sessed properties. A public relations firm had contracted to compile a report on centrally as- 6. sessed and their report indicated that it is going down and that locally assessed tax burdens are increasing. The public relations firm was pressured to drop the study, which they did but the report was still made available for use. Commissioner Hatch said the information they gathered at the meetings would be useful in dealingwith centrally assessed tax issues. As a result of the proposed increase, the tax on a $100,000 residence will be $118.20, and the tax on a business having the same value as the average value of a residence in the taxing entity will be $236.40. Without the proposed increase the tax on a $100,000 residence would be $0.00, and the tax on a business having the same value as the average value of a residence in the taxing entity would be $0.00. The 2003 proposed tax rate is .002364. Without the proposed increase the rate would be 0. This would be an increase of 100, which is $118.20 per year ($9.85 per month) on a $100,000 residence or $236.40 per year on a business having the same value as the average value of a residence in the taxing entity. With NEW GROWTH, this property tax increase and other factors, the City of Green River will increase its property tax revenue from $0.00 collected last year to $75,000 COLLECTED THIS YEAR WHICH IS A REVENUE INCREASE OF 100.
