(8122p) Whether youre headed for a safari in East Africa or Grandmas house in Wisconsin, following some simple guidelines can help ensure your health stays with you and follows you home, says a travel medicine expert at Stanford University Medical Center First and foremost make sure your immunizations are up to date, says emergency medicine specialist Eric L. Weiss, MD, an assistant professor of surgery who directs the Stanford Travel Medicine Service at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, part of UCSF Stanford Health Care. Travel is a good reminder that it might be time to up- date your immunizations," says Weiss. For example, al- most everyone should have a tetanus shot every 10 years, but most people are prompted to get this protection only after they have an accident. But the prospect of travel can be a winning formula to help remember to ask your caregiver if youre due for a tetanus booster; he explains. If youre traveling to Oregon and step on a nail, you dont want to use your precious vacation time to find a doctor to give you a tetanus shot. And if you're covered by a managed care plan, its probably cheaper and easier to receive your protection from your primary care physician before you leave," adds Weiss. Other routine vaccines, at home, too, include measles, polio, and which you need probably hepatitis B and vari- cella. Flu shots are important in the winter, but if you're traveling to the tropics, where fiu is a phenomenon year-roun- d or to the Southern Hemi- sphere where fiu is a winter phenomenon in August - youll need a fiu shot even if it's the end of the flu season where you live," says Weiss. Of course, if youre traveling somewhere exotic, youH want to find out from a travel medicine specialist what special precautions you might need to take, such as immunization against yellow fever, a concern in many countries, or a rabies vaccine, useful if youre planning on getting close to wildlife," explains Weiss. Bear in mind that newly developed rabies vaccines are painless, free of side effects, and will offer peace of mind against that rabid monkey in Borneo. But the vaccine is also expensive - about $100 per shot, and you need three. And dont forget the insect repellent appropriate for your route and destination. Youll need more repellent at a Midwestern barbecue than you would on a largely bugless transpacific boat voyage. The most effective brands contain the chemical DEET, says Weiss. boundaries, bring your medications in the original prescription bottles to' avoid customs red tape and the need to explain to an inspector what those curious pills are. Always carry your medications, and any other critical items, in your carry-oluggage. Your first aid kit should include all of the standard items, n plus sport specific items -- boil, chemically treat or filter your water;" says Weiss. Travelers diarrhea (TD) affects nearly 50 percent of travelers to the tropics. Even less adventurous travelers would be wise to bring an appropriate antibiotic and antidiar-rhea- l along for of TD.
