The Spartan Page New era Compiled by the EHS journalism staff begins in Spartan Center Emery girls lose hoop opener to Springville By Jeanie Stofko EHS news services Jessie Keller EIIS News Services writer The Emery Eligh game on Dec. 3, started out writing its way into the Emery High History books. The first five players to step onto the court from Emery were seniors BJ Butler, Ben Luce, Jake Frandsen, Cole Pitchforth and junior Brad Roundy The game started out loud and crazy with the help of Joel Dorsch and his music setup. The first basket made was by Luce with a hard drive that drew a foul. Both teams played very aggressively, trying to take the ball away from each other. The first quarter was played very well by both teams, keeping the game pretty close. The crowd loved the new court and center The cheerleaders were very excited to perform at this game in the new gym. Early in the second quarter, Nick Behunin, Nick Gordon and Brad Stilson were brought into the game. Brad came out with a lot of energy and put black marks on the new court as he dove out of bounds trying to save a loose ball. As it approached the end of the first half, t he competition got stronger between both teams with players diving for the ball at every opportunity possible. The score of the first half was Emery 27, Moab 29. At the half, the Emery High drill team put on a well performed dance routine Emery Telephone also presented a donation for the Spartan Center scoreboard to Roger Swenson of the school board. The third quarter of the game started out with both teams playing very aggressively. Emery business club completes book drive The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student organization sponsored a book drive the 4. week of Nov. Emery High students brought in books that they wanted to donate. Approximately 1,300 books were 30-De- c. collected. Taking first place among varsity wrestlers was Aaron Hansen. Other varsity wrestlers to place were Jason Hansen, Chuck Butler, and Adam Ewell, second; DJ Graham and John Clements, third; and Danl Anselmo and Ches Jensen, fourth. Placing among the junior varsity wrestlers were Rod Jones and Tyler Gilson, third; and Ross Christiansen and Bevan Collard fourth. Emery will have its hands full when it hosts Delta on Dec. 9. Prior to that, the Spartans competed in the Carbon Duals in Price on Dec. 25 where 12 4-- 5. Katie Hansen is the daughter of Corey and Jill Hansen of Elmo. She has maintained a 3.8 GPA at Emery High and is ranked in the top 25 of her class. Katie is the EHS Sterling Scholar in science, a member of the drill team, Business Club, Math Club, Honor Society and is listed in Whos Who Among American High School Students. Among her leadership positions, Katie is drill team secretary, vice president of her seminary class, a member of the Huntington Stake Youth Council and a Youth Camp director. Her favorite classes include English, business and law. She enjoys church activities and being with family and friends. She plans to attend college, get a law degree and get married in the LDS Tracy and Jacki Behling of Ferron. He has maintained a 3.8 GPA and is among the top 20 in his class. He serves as FFA treasurer and secretary, and his favorite classes are English, business communica- tions and ag. Among his hobbies are fishing, camping, showing livestock at stock shows, and his two Australian Shepherd dogs. Hayden was a member of the 1997 National Championship Ag Issues Team, on the second place state Agriculture Sales Team, and took third in the state on the Range Judging Team.
