Are you in the top Even if you dont work in the top 10 occupations that are toughest on feet, you might be among the eight out of 10 adults who suffer from some sort of foot problem. Dr. Robin Ross, a New podiatrist and a member of the Dr. Scholls Foot Health Council, offers the following tips to prevent the most common foot problems. Wear comfortable, properly York-base- d fitted shoes. Buy shoes in the afternoon. Feet tend to swell throughout the day. Add insoles to your shoes to improve cushioning and shock absorption. Use corn and callus pads to reduce pain caused by friction. Take a break throughout the day to sit down and lighten your load. Inspect feet for changes, such as red spots, blisters or swelling. Take action quickly before problems worse. Bad breath is become often called a social disease, and you may be the last one to know if you have it. OP HHeaifltlk gum pockets of people with periodontal disease and inside the cavities of teeth, causing bad breath. In some rare cases, bad breath can be caused by other health problems. If your bad breath is due to oral bacteria, dentists have found that solving the problem is a partnership between dentist, dental hygienist and patient. A good, thorough dental cleaning of the teeth and under the gum pockets is a start. At home, brushing with an anti-plaqu- e, Most people associate bad breath with the' foods they eat, but more often the cause is bacteria. Bacteria can reside in the anti-tarta- r, fluo- ride toothpaste after meals, flossing, cleaningyour tongue, and using an alcohol-free mouthwash three to four times a day will help control bad breath. It was once thought that alcohol was a critical ingredient for killing oral bacteria,, but studies have shown that alcohol-fre- e mouthwash is just as effective in reducing the bacteria that cause bad breath. Its also thought that the drying effects of alcohol in mouthwash can actually contribute to bad breath. (NUI) - Most mothers do not realize that childhood diarrhea can turn deadly, according to a nationwide survey conducted by The Institute of Pediatric Nutrition. The Institutes survey also determined that mothers mis- - 1 sNswInTam.? takenly give children common fluids, such as water or soda which do not restore lost nutrients when treating diarrhea. The survey also revealed that some mothers withhold food from their child, a practice that can result in malnutrition. In fact, many mothers do not know about the best treatment for childhood diarrhea: oral rehydration therapy (ORT). If ORT is not used, a child could be put at great risk for says Dr. dehydration, Mathuram Santosham, an Institute member and ORT expert. We recommend ORT for children with diarrhea because fluids are lost rapidly and dehydration may occur within a few hours, due to their smaller body size. a simple, inexpenORT sive treatment that parents can give to infants and chilcould dren in the home prevent most of the 200,000 hospitalizations and 300 dia- deaths that occur each year in the United States in children less than 5 rrhea-related years of age. ORT involves giving an oral rehydration solution, such as Pedialyte, to a child throughout the illness, while also maintaining the childs regular diet. Oral rehydration solutions work by restoring the fluids and minerals needed to maintain essential body functions and are available without a prescription at supermarkets, drug stores and other retail outlets. Because diarrhea can quickly get out of control, the Institute recommends that parents consult a health care professional if any of the following warning signs occur, because they are often signs that an infant is dangerously dehydrated: fewer wet diapers; unusual drowsiness or missed nearly an entire week. Fifty-nin- e percent of the respondents said that fatigue made it difficult to socialize with family or friends, and a majority said that cancer fatigue interfered with daily activities such as cleaning the house, running errands and walking distances. The real message of the survey findings is that many patients with fatigue are suffering alone when treatment options are available, said Susan L. Scherr, a cancer survivor who is a member of the Fatigue Coalition and serves as Director of Community and Strategic Alliances for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. The survey included patients who had been treated for cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and skin, as well as leukemia and lymphoma. The survey was released by the a Coalition, Fatigue multidisciplinary group of medical practitioners, researchers and patient advocates. It was conducted by the Wirthlin Worldwide research organization and was underwritten by Ortho Biotech Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company.
