Show Emery County Progress, Castle Dale, Utah Paula Wellnitz, Progress Columnist Dear Editor, Ive read Delynn Fieldings Values at home are affected by the outside world article three times now and Im self-sufficie- of your members in some way. Values that are talked about and sanctioned by rules developed mutually in a family seep into the larger world as family members relate outside the home. On the other hand, people in a family relationship are presented with other ways of acting and help or not? What will our household do, if it is not? This discussion and decision-makinneeds to be a fairly deliberate process. If all members of the household take part in it, according to their capability, they are more likely to be able to deal with these questions as individuals. Please let me present some facts that everybody will understand fairly easily. Fact 1: Banks, including Zions, have had record profits the last two years. Fact 2: In the state of Utah, banks have on deposit $8.90 out of every $10.00. Fact 3: In the state of Utah, credit unions have on deposit g was all fun and games until the door got locked: It (Continued from page 6A) to the big door of the shop. The door was open, and as we looked in, we noticed a few students were working on props and decorations for the Junior Prom, which was coming up soon. As on the door, we could see through the crack it made, into the shop area. It just happened to be the area where the shop teacher was working. Okay, were ready to get out, we called down. It would have been question- that realization struck us, we must have all had the able whether or not the same idea at the same teacher heard us, had he time. Hey, can we not glanced up in our direc- help out tion. with the prom decorations? We walked in and joined the students inside. No, was the firm answer. Were having trouble finding enough work for us. If we dont keep busy, theyre going to put some of us on another project. Better find something else. We were feeling a bit discouraged as we moved back to the open door and scanned the outside for any authoritative figures (teachers). There were none, and we were just ready to move on when there was a loud crash behind us. We turned to see a couple pieces of lumber that had fallen from the storage room, located above the band room. As we watched, a student came out of the storage room and made his way down the ladder which was nailed to the wall. the student reached the floor, and began to gather up his lumber, we looked at each other. No one had seemed to even pay any attention to the student, nor his disturbance. We began to move slowly in the direction of the ladder. One by one, we moved quickly but quietly up the ladder, and into the storage room. One final As glance down below revealed that, as far as we could see, no one had given any attention to our quick ascent. But, instead of hurrying the door, as we had assumed he would, he simply went back to his over to unlock work. Several times we called down, and several times we would break it down. The teacher looked up thoughtfully, laid down the project he was working on, and walked out the door. That was our cue. It was our chance to get out and away before he returned. We picked up a 4 x 4 and lined it up with the door. One, two, and three. The ram plunged its way into the target. The door split in half, with the hinged part hanging precariously down into the opening, while the other half hung down over the first step or two of the ladder. Our triumph was shortlived, however, because, as if it were timed to happen at the same instant, the front door opened, and in walked the shop teacher, and the principal. Suddenly, everything froze, as the two of them walked over and stopped at the foot of the street, away from the school, we should have been sad and remorseful. But we werent. Somehow, we knew it wouldnt last long before were back in school, and we looked forward to a day or so off. What are you doing home already? My mother asked, as I walked in the door, a couple of hours earlier than usual. I explained what had happened. Now, Mom had been a school teacher, and so she had very little sympathy for the three of us for what we had done. the principal lv 1 took exception to that. In a moment, the two of us were in the car and headed back to school. Now as to federal and state income taxes, credit unions do not pay these for one reason. Congress set them up this way 60 years ago because they are truly institunon-prof- it tions. Credit unions benefit as a whole, not by any individual group or person, such as a board of directors or a bank president. Sure they make money but the money that a other fund. Credit unions today do the same thing as credit unions of yesterday. They may be bigger, they may offer more services but they still adhere to the same principles by which they were created in the first place. Credit unions only want there little corner of the kitchen, banks already have the rest of the house. If its really true competition that banks want, watch out. Brokerage houses, insurance companies, and even Microsoft all want your business. Banks should nearly decide who the real wolves are. Oh and as long as banks are looking over their shoulders, they better watch out for the national banks such as Citibank, Chase, Nations. They are also eyeing the Utah market. The really big boys want to play; too. The truth is banks and credit unions need each other. They both fill a useful purpose. They should be friendly competitors not bitter rivals. The only people gaining from all this are the lawyers. Gary Arrington Board Chairman Desertview Federal Credit Union Goodwrench Servic Think Of Us As Your For A Change!
