Show 8A Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 30, 1993 Two named AP test scholars Two former students at Em- ery High School have been named AP Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-levAdvanced Placement (AP) Examinations last spring. Only about 11 percent of the 424,000 students who took AP examinations in May 1 993 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit such recognition. The two, who graduated in el Chris Thorpe Matt Fielding San Rafael Bulldogs STUDENTS OF THE WEEK April Sanders and Tim Jensen have been chosen as San Rafael Junior High School's students of the week. April is the ninth grade student ol Ron and Pat Sanders of Castle Dale She has three brothers and three sisters in her family. This year In school her favorite subjects are science, English and band. She is involved In volleyball, basketball and the Honor Society. She plays the piano and the drums. She enjoys Emery County because there is not much violance and "you know everyone," she says. Someday she would like to visit Paris. In her sapre time April enjoys reading, doing things with friends sports and playing the piano. After high school she plans on college to become a nurse. T im is the 14 year old son of Doris and Mike Jensen of Clawson He has one brother and one sister. This year in school his favorite subject is science. He likes living in Emery County because it isn't crowded. Tim's favorite movie star is John Wayne. After high school Tim plans on serving a mission for the LDS Church. Right now he is looking forward to the day when he can drive. If he could visit any country in the world he would like to see Denmark. In his spare time, Tim likes to farm, skate board, fish and hunt. He is a member of the San Rafael Band and playsthe coronet. T im is a hard worker and enjoys teasing his Mother. Chris qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning grades of three or above on four examination, with an average exam grade of 4.0. Matt qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three AP Examinations with grades of three or higher. The College Board recognizes three levels of achievement-th- e AP Scholar with Distinction, the AP Scholar with Honor, and the AP Scholar. AP Examinations, which students take in May after com Emery High School Players of the Week college-lev- el courses at their high school, are graded on a scale (5 is the highest). Most of the nation's colleges and universities award credit andor placement for grades of three or higher, and more than 1 ,300 institutions award a year of credit to students with a sufficient number of qualifying grades. There are 29 AP Examinations in 16 disciplines, each consisting of multiple-choic- e and free response (essay or problem-solvinques g) tions. The College Board is a national, nonprofit association of more than 2,800 schools and agencies in higher and secondary education committed to promoting educational opportunity and improving academic standards. The board sponsors programs in guidance, assessment, admissions, placement, financial aid, and credit by examination to assist in the transition of some 4 million students each year. school-to-colle- ge Emery District honors workers The Emery Board of Educa- tion has named Nyles Snyder, Sharyn Hughes and Connie Wilstead as Employees of the Month for October 1993. Following are comments from the board on these employees: "Nyles Snyder has been selected as the Outstanding Sec- ondary Teacher. Nyles has taught in the Emery District since 1969 as a junior high teacher. He has taught math, Utah history, U.S. history, world geography and civics. Nyles is well known among his students and fellow teachers as being very patient, caring and understanding with those he interacts with each day. He is supportive of the kids' activities and encourages his students to do well in all learning situations. He takes pride in his students when a job is well been liighly respected by dis- trict administrators as they in-tera- ct and work together to make our schools a place where kids can grow and learn. "Sharyn Hughes has been selected as the Outstanding Elementary Teacher. Sharyn is in her 12th year as the first grade teacher at Book Cliff Elementary. She has a positive influence on her students and works to make sure that each student feels important. Sharyn is well versed in com- puter science. She is well pre- pared and puts in many extra hours preparing for instruction. Sharyn strives to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning. He is vice president of the F.F.A. and president of the Rodeo Club. J. K. J. K.'s favorite sports are riding horses and rodeoing. He plans to make a career in agriculture business. J. K. is the son of Jimmy and Patsy Allred. Joshua Jenkins 66I want to talk is the son of Valdean and Floree Jenkins of Ferron. Josh is a senior at Emery. He is an honor roll student and works hard at all he does. He has a great personality and is kind to everyone. He enjoys seminary and is a whiz in math. He loves football and track, he Is currently working on his eagle project and will soon be an eagle scout he plans to attend a year of college and then serve a mission for his church. Then he plans to go on to medical school to become a pediatrician. He works great with kids.
