Show Progress Tuesday, November 30, 1993 2A Emery County Bridge dedication (Continued rom Page LA) Grazing officials, the Castle Dale Commercial Club, county and city officials, representatives of the church and civic organizations will meet this week to pass on the proposed date and to make arrangements for the event." The Progress described the new bridge as not unique in Utah but certainly unusual. "The new bridge is swung on two cables, each two and one-hainches in diameter and more than 250 feet long. Four concrete towers, two on each bank of the San Rafael River, supports the cables, which have their ends fastened securely in the solid ground 50 feet from the edge of the stream. The distance between the towers is 160 feet. The bridge is 14 feet wide and will permit the passing of two automobiles. The floor is of heavy planking. The bridge was designed by Mr. Lehman, of the EC W engineering department. Actual construction has been in progress for the past year under the direction of M.P. Greaves, superintendent of DG camp 27 at Castle Dale, and Omar Freeman, grazing division lf Copyright 1993 Emery County Progress. The article concludes, "Early spring is the most delightful time of the year to visit this wonderland country, and it is expected that thousands will avail themselves the opportunity to see this interesting and little visited section of southeastern Utah by attending this dedicatory service." Plans for the March 27 dedication ran into trouble when several dignitaries could not attend. The March 19, 1937, Emery County Progress ran a which story indicates, "Weather conditions will probably be more settled by postponing the date thirty days, and it will afford the committee in charge more time to prepare plans for making the dedication one of the outstanding celebrations of the year." On April 16, 1937, the Progress ran a story about the importance of the bridge to the area. The article ran under the headline: Dedication of San Rafael Bridge of Great Import to Entire Eastern Utah. The story states, "This bridge spans the San Rafael River at its confluence with the Buck-hor- n Canyon stream twenty-fiv- e miles east of Castle Dale. It makes possible the crossing of this barrier into thousands of acres of winter grazing.
