Show tuniirf-tug- in Emery wins season opener W. Larry Sports briefs Wrestlers open season The Emery wrestling team opened the season at the Juab Turkey Tournament last week in Nephi. The Spartans had a combined varsityjunior varsity score of 215 which put the team in fourth place among the field. Millard was first with 273 points followed by Juab with 226, and South Summit with 261.5. After Emery came Richfield with 134 points. Emery had several wrestlers place at the meet. Junior Kirk Christiansen, 112, placed first; Alvin Ewell, 119, placed fourth; Dicky Cooper, 125, placed fourth; Tyrell Gray, 135 , placed second; John Brown, 145, placed fourth; Jesse Curtis, 152, placed second; Brad Hess, 160, placed second; Brett Guymon, 171, placed second; Tommy Eden, 189, placed fourth; and Cade Jones, heavyweight, placed third. In the junior varsity division, Cody Sherman, 103, placed third; K.C. Alton, 119, placed third; Travis Baker, 140, placed third; Cody Peacock, 145, placed third; Willie Owens, 152, placed third; Jarom Worthen, 160, placed second; Shane Gunderson, 171, placed second; Jeff Rawson, 189, placed second; and James Sasser, heavyweight, placed first. Coach Darrell Gardner said that Emery placed third place in varsity and junior varsity but was fourth when scores were combined. "There were a lot of good performances," he said of the tournament. "We made a lot of mistakes because we are inexperienced." Emery will take to the mat again this week when it hosts Union on Wednesday. In the Saturday night game against Cedar City, which advanced to the championship game after defeated Lehi, Emery led from start to finish enroute to the win. Gordon again had a great night with 28 points as he hit eight Bradley finished with 16 points while Stephen Grant added nine. Davis Progress editor CASTLE DALE- - Six seniors will lead the Emery Lady Spartan hoop team into action this week as Emery opens the season against Wasatch tonight (Tuesday). Coach Duane Mer-rewill be relying on the experience and leadership of these seniors to boost Emery to a successful season. Back for their senior season a are guards Angela Gentry, ll Heidi Lemmon Jes-sic- named Two to Jaime Monfredi Oveson and Shanae guardforward Courtney Thomas, centerforward LeRoy, Jaime Monfredi, and center Nicky Larsen. Gentry, Oveson, LeRoy and Monfredi saw a lot of varsity time last season with all but Oveson filling starting roles. LeRoy and Monfredi were all-stat- e 3A first team Two outstanding members of the Emery High volleyball team have been named to the first-tea- 3A m All-sta- te Volley- ball Team. Seniors Jaime Monfredi and Ileidi Lemmon were named to the Salt Lake Tribune team recently. The publication named North Sanpete's Sadie Christensen the most valuable player in 3A. Although coach Merrell had not selected his starters for this week's opener late last week, he said that he is looking at an All-regi- all-seni- starting five. How- ever, he said that juniors Natalie Swasey, a guard, Dana Bott, a forwardcenter, and Heather Ward, a guard, will see a lot of varsity action. Those three are the only juniors on the team. Also, coach Merrell said that he has a very talented and athletic group of nine sophomores on the team. The players will make up the sophomore team while seeing plenty of junior varsity time. Coach Nancy Martinez will be assiting and coaching the JV and sopho- more teams. Sophomores include: Jessica Hansen, guard; Mindy Gordon, forward; Monica Cox, guard; Marisa Vipperman, forward; Brydi Griffin, forward; Molly Gentry, guard; Annika Oman, Rodeo report and Lindsay Pitts, Wasatch. Coach Merrell calls Region 11 "very competitive and strong" among all 3A regions. He said that all schools in the region will have good teams. To match up with the competition, the coach said hell be looking for Emery to use its experience. "We have experience with our six seniors," he said. "We have really good guards, and Jaime (Monfredi) is a very hard worker in the middle. Nicky (Larsen) has worked hard all year to get ready, and Courtney (Thomas) will give us a lift off the bench. We're going to count on some of the younger players to help giving weekend. Hosting the last two rodeos were Enterprise and Dixie. These next two rodeos were the largest since the series first started years ago. That means instead of 99 barrel racers, there were approximately 150. Instead of 70 goat tying participants, there were about 90. All the different events are swelling with contestants. Winning a spot in the top 10 at any Utah High School Rodeo is not a small feat. i i. too." The coach said of the season, "If we can come together as a team, I think we'll be fine. It will take eight or nine players for the team to be successful." j i Emery's opener will be against the Lady Wasps of Wasatch, a team which the coach says will give Emery a competitive game. "Wasatch is a good team for us to open with," he said. After that, Emery will participate in the SUU T ournament where it will face Juab and Millard, two 2A teams. In all, Emery has a schedule which includes four straight home games, four straight region games on the road, and the last two region games at home. The coach said that the entire 3A classification will be interesting to watch this season. He says that each team in Region 11 has a shot while outside Region 11 he sees Pine View, the returning 3A state champs, 20-ga- Uintah and Hurricane as be- ing teams to watch. V |
