DAVIS Progress editor CASTLE DALE Youve got to wonder about the upcoming boys basketball season at Emery High School. But if you are wondering how the team might do this year, youre not alone. Even the coaches and players are thinking about what this season will have in store for them. There are just a lot of ques- tions about this years team, coach Todd Jeffs said late last week as he was preparing the Spartans for this weeks open- at home against Richfield on Wednesday. Were very talented, but were also very inexperienced with none of our players this year seeing much varsity time last year. Eight seniors graduated from the 1990 state 3A champer ionship team which finished the season with a 22-- 2 record. That bunch of seniors, which included 76 Shawn Bradley, was expected to do well, and they did, winning two straight state championships, extendg streak ing the to 43 games, and bringing basketball respect to the smallest 3A school. But while that was going on, this years players were getting their experience in junior varsity and sophomore games for the most part. Jared Butler, Gus Childs, Jason Huntington, Mike Cole, Ryan Burke and Mike Gagon lettered in basketball, but saw little varsity time. I really dont know how this group will react to varsity situations, coach Jeffs said. We have some of the best talent weve had, but youve got to wonder about the lack of experience. Speaking of talent, Butler, who was the leading rebounder and scorer on the junior varsity team last year, is among the best big men in the state this season. Jared could have started varsity for a lot of the teams in the state in his junior year, the coach said. He just wasnt able to get the varsity time at Emery because of the depth we had with our seniors. This year hell get h's chance, and were looking for a lot of good things from him. He has the potential to be a great player. Senior Gus Childs will also start for Emery, but the coach said he isnt sure exactly where either point guard or No. 2 guard. Gus matured a lot during football to become a team leader. Well be looking to him for direction, especially early in the season when everyone is finding their roles. He shoots well and, in fact, has than last a better year. Chris Justice and Jon Skipps are each big men. He said that Richfield has been able to get about a months jump on Emery in basketball because of the early end to their football season. Theyve got more practice behind them and will probably look more polished while we might be a little ragged, but I think weve got the talent to carry us through, coach Jeffs said. Im very excited to get to the first game to see just where our kids are going to be. I feel good about the way things are going so far, bo n, 00000 off 00 teams to be concerned about. And looking at the region, the coach said Wasatch returns two of the quickest and most aggressive guards in the state, making it one of the scored over 40 points in one game against Emery last season as a sophomore. They want to keep the traditions alive, and I think that will help them to perform better. The Spartans will have to perform well during the regular season in order to qualify for the state tournament this year. The pressure to continue the success in Emery basketball is there for the kids, the said. Now in his The reason coach Jeffs is a little ambivalent about where Childs might start is because of the football injury to junior guard Mike Gagon who was expected to be the starting point guard this season. He is excepted to available to the team in January, the coach said. With Mike out with the injury, it creates a lot of things for us, a lot of possibilities. We have several guards, including Gus, but well have to see how they can fit into our game plan. Coach Jeffs said he is looking at senior Brink Griffin and a pair of juniors, Nathan Huntington and Ryan Burke, as other starting guard possibilities. Brink is going to be very valuable to us in light of the injury to Gagon, he said. Depending on how things work out, we could start either Burke or Huntington. Ryan is a deadly outside shooter, excellent from range, and Nathan is just a solid player who handles the offense well. Looking along the front line of the Spartans, Jason Huntington, at 64 gives Emery a big player with a soft jumper. Right now the coach is hoping that the seniors defense will improve and that hell become more aggressive inside. Mike Cole, also a senior, is sometimes overly aggressive. But coach Jeffs likes his physical play and at 65, Cole is a decent rebounder. In addition to Burke and Nathan Huntington, Emery has several juniors who could see regular varsity action. KEY BOARDS and defensive rebounds. Justice is more of a short outside threat on offense. The coach said that depending on how things work out on the guardline, one of these two juniors could start at forward. Robert Grant brings some height to the junior players. At 63 he is a fine inside player to complement the play of Justice and Skipps. New to the team is junior guard Robert Vasquez, a transfer from Carbon High School. Hes the quickest player on the team, the coach said. Hell play point guard for us and could move into a varsity role before the season is over. The coach said that as of the end of last week, there are three starting positions open. Weve really been emphasizing defense. One of our goals is to play solid, aggressive defense in every game. Were telling our kids that the ones who can play that kind of defense are the ones wholl be starting for us.
