It puts us close to a foreign land from where the winds of war blow our way incessantly. Geraldine Sanders of Perron has felt the harsh winds of war many times during her membership in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post 2379. After World War II, she became a member in the 1950s and served as a volunteer as the United States entered the Korean conflict and then again in the 1960s in Vietnam. 35-ye- ar Now its Saudi Arabia and Kuwait a situation which is frightening to the Posts oldest member. Iler personal involvement as an auxiliary member has put her closer to the crisis than is comfortable, yet she is trying to do all she can to help the veterans at home, knowing that more foreign veterans and casualties of wmr may soon be returning to America. Mrs. Sanders, whose hus- Walter R. Sanders was a veteran of World War II, has band served in many capacities in the Legion Auxiliary. Her job at the present time is poppy chairman, a positon she takes very seriously. The money goes to help the veterans, she says, especially those veterans who are disab donations Since former Utah Gov. Scott Matheson died Oct. 6, 200 individuals and groups have sent donations totaling $30,000 to the Scott M. Matheson Public Leadership Forum at the University of Utah The Matheson Leadership Forum was established in the Hinckley Institute of Politics in 1985 just after the governors second term. Its purpose is to enable elected officals who have left office to reflect, write and speak about their led and in veteran hospitals. She knows the importance of veteran hospitals. Several years ago she was with her husband when he died in the veterans hospital in Salt Lake City. She was with him too when he was buried with other veterans in a cemetery in that city. And thoughts of her husband, a mechanic in the U.S. Army who served in Germany experiences, although the may now be broadened to offer scholarships and internships for students. When Matheson died of cancer at 61, the family suggested contributions to the forum in lieu of flowers. As of Nov. 16, the largest contribution was $5,000, says Jayne Nelson of the Hinckley Institute. The institute has received one check for $3,500, another for $2,000 and five for $1,000. But the rest were relatively small, such as $25, $100 and $200. The staff at a restaurant the Matheson family frequently patronized passed the y hat. Her home in Ferron is decorated with wash-clot- h rabbits which will be sent to disabled veterans Christmas. for The VFW is here to help veterans, she emphasizes. The organization puts the flags on the graves of veterans each Memorial Day and holds s during the year fund-raiser- to fund other veteran projects. One of those projects in the poppy sales. We emphasize the sale of poppies twice a year once at Veterans Day and once at Memorial Day. We get permission to stand out- side businesses and then ask the public to help veterans by buying a poppy. They pay whatever they like. The poppies were originally made by disabled veterans, but it seems they are now mass produced. Mrs. Sanders and her daughter Sandra Ilowell, also of Ferron, have sold poppies on and off for years. She said that she feels very strongly about the veterans organization and was especially moved when she visited Hawaii and saw the Punch Bowl where U.S. servicemen killed during the raid on Pearl Harbor are buried. I cant help but be moved by those who have given their lives for our country, she said. We take for granted the freedoms that we have in the United States. Being raised in the home of a veteran has given Mrs. Howell insight into these freedoms, yet she fears that war in filed Assemby With purchase of new bike from our slow Regular 695 E fi$ef One Year Service With purchase of new bike from our store the Middle East will be devastating and could result in her mothers seven grandchildren being sent to war. Mrs. Sanders said that one of the concerns now for the organization is to get more members to help with g the projects. Any veteran of a foreign war or spouse of a veteran is eligible to join.
