But parents can do a lot to foster a childs love for reading. Here are several suggestions from Tom Lee, Utah State University Extension family and human development specialist. A tried and true method is reading aloud to your kids at bedtime. But Lee says parents can do much more. First, establish a routine of reading aloud. Pick a time that works well for your family, even it its at breakfast. Bring children into the story as you read, Lee says. An example is to stop every so often to ask your child a question or discuss what might happen next. Get a library card and make regular visits there with your children, Lee says. Parents can also encourage reading skills in children ages 7 by labeling things to build word recognition. Choose common words such as mirror, chair, window or bed, he said. Another idea is creating books on tape. Either you or older children can record a favorite book on cassette so young children can follow along. 3-- with purchase of $150 or more Retired teachers enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at Ferron Elementary Friday, Nov. 1 6 as part of the staff appreciation activities.
