Show Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 14, 1989 9A Scout leaders honored By ELIZABETH HANSON Staff writer Leadership is a ship that leaves a safe harbor in the storm, said scouting executive Ted Farmer, kicking off the 1989 Emery District BSA Leadership Recognition Night at Ferron last week. Once a year, the spotlight focuses on adult leadership and the subtle use of the velvet spur to keep on performing. Never retiring. District officials were sworn in by scouter Paul Crookston of Price. Featured speaker Steve Stream defined a good leader as one committed to giving his time to the boys and hating to give them up when they move up and on. The association has become so comfortable, like the deputies have with their patrol cars, driving them from hours a day, caring for them and reluctant to have them replaced even after 100,000 miles. Sometimes, he has noted, when the deputies step out of their cars, the cars will follow along behind them. Boys in trouble have low Leaders do whatever it takes to build the selfesteem of each boy. They help every situation turn out well. Dont be afraid to be involved in activities. Once we took the kids snow skiing for the first time to a Salt Lake 6-- 10 self-estee- City resort. Once we rented motorcycles and took them to the desert. All night long the roar went on. One kid crashed. Streams years of activity with the scouts have borne fruit. I have grownup men returning to visit or writing letters to tell Carol Ann how much they appreciate her letting me go with them.
