Show Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 14, 1989 7 A Scofield Reservoir gets major fish plant Fall is the time of year when the fancy of some fishermen turns to critters of the antlered persuasion. Still others sit back in their lazy boys and dream of next summers carefree weekends dangling a harvested, fertilized and incubated the eggs. After seven months, 90 percent grew to finger-siz- e (hence the name, trucks backed down the boat ramp one at a time. Hatchery workers took temperatures of tanks and reservoir water. Lake temperature may not be more then 7 degrees Fah0 renheit cooler (or tank than degrees warmer) temperatures. This time, temperatures matched closely. Drain valves were thrown open, and a slurry of fish emptied into the shallow bay. According to Eric Feather-stonwildlife technician, The fish are often stressed by the haul and release. Initially, they seek deep water, where they rest on the bottom. After discharge from the truck-- fingerling). Two days before the sche- duled release, flngerlings line and soaking up were taken off feed. Experience has shown that they travel better on an empty stomach. The tank water stays a lot cleaner, too. On the release day, fish were carefully transferred from hatchery runs to tanks sunshine. While deer were on the minds of many, DWRs Midway and Egan hatcheries were mobilizing their fleet of trucks for a major fish plant at Scofield Park Marina. The plant represented almost a year of planning. It all started with Egan Hatchery personnel raising the 5-- 15-2- atop specially designed trucks, where oxygen and water temperature are closely e, regulated. The trip to Scofield takes about two and one-hahours. A total of three round trips fish, which produced the hundreds of thousands of brood lf staff eggs. Hatchery were required by four trucks. Upon arrival at the marina, mounted tanks, the fish appeared disoriented ming in helter-skelte- swim- r fashion sometimes running aground. The mass of swirling fish seemed to make the water boil. This sight was of more than just passing interest to resident gulls, which homed in on the bait ball. Shotguns, loaded with shell crackers, are often required to ward off aerial predators. When major problems are anticipated, DWR resorts to night planting. As the rainbows became acclimated to the bay, they schooled together, and cruised the shoreline. This behavior continues for a day or so, according to Featherstone. Thereafter, the school fragments and disperses entirely. At that time, the flngerlings resume feeding after their prolonged fast. Typical fare consists of zooplankton, which includes freshwater shrimp and microscopic animals. The world is a dangerous place for miniature fish. Walleye (illegally introduced by misquided anglers) prey upon the young fish. Winter also takes its toll. Notwithstand expected to survive until next summer. By then, they will be 1 inches long, and will and weigh between s pounds. About 30 percent are expected to find their way to the creel. So relax, and dream of next years fishing trips. Thanks to the hatchery system, youll have a couple of fish for the skillet after enjoying a pleasant day in the sun. one-ha- lf three-fourth- military news Army National Guard Private Casey J. Spartans season is over 9 (Continued from Page 6) game. To add insult to injury, Woods Cross picked off a StU-so- n pass on the first play after Emery got the ball, and then the next time the Spartans had possession, the Wildcats blocked a Spartan punt. It wasnt until Andy Olsen a Woods Cross fumble at the 4:30 mark that recovered Emery finally got a break. That gave the Spartans the ball at the Emery 13, but the Woods Cross defense would not yield and forced another Emery punt. After that, the Wildcats were able to run the remaining time off the clock as the game ended. Emery had four turnovers in the game to just one by the Wildcats. Stilson passed for 161 yards and one touchdown as he completed 11 of 26 passes. Gordon had six receptions for 77 yards, and Allred had five catches for 94 yards.
