Show 10B Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 22, 1988 PUBLIC NOTICE THE Cool weather increases mine hazards The Winter Alert program, which annually calls special attention to increased safety hazards in coal mining during fall and winter months, is now underway. The Labor Departments Mine Safety and Health Ais dministration (MSHA) coal nations the reminding mine operators that major mining accidents, especially underground explosions of gas and dust, have been more likely between late September and the end of March than at other times of the year, according to historical data. In winter months, falling to occur where it is mixture of air and methane come in contact with an ignition source. MSHA inspectors and training specialists are reminding coal mine operators to pay special attention to coal dust control and ventilation during the fall and winter months. Operators are being urged to susceptible to exploding under certain circumstances. Low barometric pressures during colder months also can allow potentially explosive methane gas to migrate from inactive parts of the mine to travelways and working areas, thereby increasing the risk of an explosion, should an explosive procedures and to the safe use of explosives. Rockdusting is a method of applying inert materials to mine surfaces to help prevent an explosive mixture of coal dust from getting into the underground atmosphere. Company personnel also are being temperatures and barometric pressure changes increase the risk of mine explosions. During this period, cool, dry air enters underground coal mines, becomes warm and draws moisture from the workings. As coal dust dries out, it can become suspended in the mine atmosphere use adequate rockdusting encouraged to make frequent tests for methane and to maintain proper ventilation in the underground workings, paying special attention to areas that are not frequently traveled. MSHA also is advising coal mine operators to have hoists, elevators, haulage and transportation equipment examined for buildup of ice. The agency also is urging miners to review on training procedures emergency escape routes and the correct use of devices, and is encouraging operators to focus on the maintenance of proper self-resc- ue flower arrangements to brighten the house. To keep g flowers longer takes just a little care. Flowers should have plenty of water, adding it daily if necessary as it is absorbed, says Bill Varga, Utah State fresh-lookin- University Extension horticulturist, and Shawn Olsen, USU Extension agent in Davis County. Warm water should be used, Varga Olsen writes in their NovemberDecember newslet- - of water. If possible, stems should be recut, and leaves below the water line should be removed. Also, Varga and Olsen say, arrangements should be placed out of direct sunlight, away Thank You would like to announce that Devan Bjarnson, Ferron Elementary 1st was the winner of Jirader, Prevention Week's theme "In Home Fire Hazards" and home escape routes.
