Show 8A Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 22, 1988 Exhibit features LBS artwork missionary i SALT LAKE CIT- Y- A selection of paintings from the historic Mormon Panorama of C.C.A. Christensen has returned to the Museum of Church History and Art for an extended exhibition. Eleven of the 23 paintings created between 1878 and 1885 to tell the story of early Latter-da- y Saint history in Ohio, Missouri and Illinois will hang at the museum, just west of Temple Square, for 17 months, through April 9, 1990. The popular series, on loan from Young Brigham University, features the Danish immigrant artists vivid renderings of historic events from the life of Joseph Smith and the early years of the Church of Christ of Jesus Latter-da- y Saints. History will preserve much, Christensen once said of that period in LDS history, but art alone can make the suffering of the Saints comprehensible for posterity. With that objective in mind, said the exhibits curator, Richard G. Oman, Christensen collected stories from eyewitnesses to the mobbings and persecutions and preserved them on canvas for the younger generation. Christensen was a master storyteller, Oman added. His originally were stitched together and rolled up like a scroll. During winter months, Christensen toured LDS settlements in Utah, Idaho, paintings Wyoming and Arizona from his Sanpete County farm, lecturing on church history with his panorama as illustration. Paintings selected for the current exhibition begin with the tarring and feathering of Joseph Smith in Ohio, and the Missouri mob actions at Crooked River and Hauns Mill. The story continues with images of church leaders being betrayed at Far West and imprisoned at Liberty, Mo. For the Nauvoo period, the series includes the Prophet Joseph preaching to Indians and mustering the Nauvoo Legion. Christensens interpretation of the martyrdom at Carthage Jail and his detailed architectural rendering of the Nauvoo Temple conclude that section of the exhibit. From the exodus to Utah, the work featured are and Quail Catching Pioneers Crossing the Plains of Nebraska. Each painting is 66 tall and 99 wide, painted with a tempera on canvas. now-fragi- le Descendants the of artists family donated the historic scenes to the church in the 1950s. Brigham Young University has custody of the rare works and is continuing conservation work on those paintings not included in the present exhibition. All 22 of the surviving pieces were last shown in April 1985 at the grand opening of the Museum of Church History and Art. Christensens Panorama first national attention when the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City exhibited it in 1970. In conjunction with that exhibit and one at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts later in the year, cultural historian Carl Carmer described the accomplishment in widely read articles in Art In America, won and American Heritage magazines. Oman says Christensens art captures the sense of early Latter-da- y Saint history possibly better than any of the artists of his generation. He is the only 19th century Mormon artist who was interested in depicting the mobbings in narrative painting, Oman added. The Christensen exhibit launches the museums yearlong effort to present new exhibits on LDS history. During the next year, said Glen M. will open a retrospective art exhibit on historical themes and complete a major permanent exhibit on church history. Carmer said of the The Christensen paintings, bright, clear colors, the vitality of the human figures, the strength of the compositions, give them a unique quality. At a time in the early history of American art when paintings were somewhat academically and woodenly categorized as museum director Leondard, we portraits, histories, landscapes Carmer and said, Christensen accomplished a melding of the latter two into a vigorous style that proved superior to that of most of the painting of his time.
