There 1988 the Spartans were eliminated from the state 2A playoffs last Friday when San Juan recorded a 20-- 8 win. By winning, the Broncos advance into the this week against Millard. The other semi-fina- ls semi-fin- al game features Richfield against Park City. By losing, Emery will put the pads up for the season, but those associated with the team will look back at a successful year as the team finished with a 4 season and a third place finish in the region. Against San Juan, Emery was hurt by a pair of gimmick plays as the Broncos used one halfback pass to set up a touchdown and another to score a touchdown. The Spartans also failed to capitalize on early scoring opportunities while being kept out of good field position in the second half by penalties. Still, the Emery defense held the prolific Bronco offense to just a single score in the first half, and Emery was still very much in the game until the Broncos scored on a halfback pass in the fourth quarter. That came just after Emery quarterback Chris Wilson scored on a sneak and then passed to Chris McCourt conversion to cut for the the lead to 14-- 8 with 4:59 left in the game. After that touchdown by Emery, the Spartans used an kick and just effective missed recovering at midfield. However, San Juan ended up with possession and good field position. Two plays later, quarterback Ladd Shumway pitched to running back Michael Brown as he ran to his right. Brown then tossed downfield to Jimmy Ray who took the ball in at the 15 and then ran into the end zone. That touchdown, which came at the 4:01 mark, just about ended the Spartan hopes of a comeback. Hopes were put further out of reach when Emerys next drive ended in an interception. After taking the kickoff to the Emery 24, Emery moved to the Spartan 47 on runs by Wilson and Lyle Everett and a pass completion to Blake Butler. But on third and seven, Wilsons pass for Scott Cheynoweth was picked off by Shumway who returned the ball to the Bronco 45. Although Emery held, forcing a Bronco punt with 1:22 left in the game, the Spartans next possession also ended in a turnover. This time Wilsons pass over the middle was picked off by Ray who returned the ball to the Emery 19 with 22 seconds to play. Two plays later, Emery got the ball back when Gordon intercepted a Shumway pass and returned it up the sideline to the Bronco four, giving the Spartans another opportunity to score. On the first play, Stilson carried to the two on what appeared to be a busted play, but on the next play, an Emery lineman moved, and the penalty put the Spartans back to the seven, second and goal. A pass from Stilson to Gordon picked up 13 yards to the Emery 40, and a pair of runs by McCourt got Emery to the San Juan 43. Going back to the air, Stilson hit Travis Wakefield for a gain to the 33 and later came back to connect with Cheynoweth at the 21. A quarterback sneak by Stilson gave Emery a first and 10 at the 18. Then things went sour for Emery. On first down, Stilson was dropped for a loss to the 23, and on second down his lob pass for Gordon inside the 10 was intercepted by San Juans Brent Bowers as the Broncos stopped another drive, this time at their own five with 32 seconds left in the half. Jeff Guymon gave Emery good field position to open the second half as he returned the kickoff to the Spartan 41. From there, Emery moved into San Juan territory, but on a third down and four, the drive ended when Stilson fumbled as he rolled to his right, and the are isolated eventually will be removed from the economic stream, Wilson said.
