Mr. Davis was among 24 candidates from school districts from throughout the stab. Winners were announced at a reception at the State Office of Education in Salt Lake City Oct. 7 by Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction James R. She received a cash award of $500 presented by Key Bank of Utah. The program, held annually, begins at each school in the Elementary School state. Faculties from the schools select a nominee. The nominees are then submitted for district competition, and each district submits one entrant for state consideration. The state winner goes on to national competition. addition In to Davis, nominees from Emery District were: Tim Farr, San Rafael Junior High; Christy Bingham, Cleveland Elementary; Far-nu- m Young, Huntingtoi Elementary; Sharyn B. Hughes, Book Cliff Elementary; and - Nolan Johnson, Green River High School. Mr. Davis, a graduate of Utah State University, began his career in education at Spanish Fork High School in 1973 where he taught English, journalism and photography for eight years. While there he also coached baseball, was advisor to the school newspaper, literary magazine and ski club. In 1980 he was named that schools male outstanding faculty member. After eight years at Spanish Fork High, he became editor of the Spanish Fork Press and then in 1982 came to Emery County as editor of the Emery County Progress. In 1985 he began teaching a journalism class at Emery High School, and in 1986 e member he became a of the faculty. Presently he is teaching AP English, senior full-tim- English, and yearbook photography. He has remained editor of the Progress as well. Powell, supervisor of instruction and staff development for the Emery District, said, Larry sees involvement not as wielding power or meddling in personal affairs, but as a valid expression of concern for the welfare of others. Emery County High School, the Emery School District, and the state of Utah have good reason to honor this 12th grade teacher. And, members of the teaching profession should rejoice in the knowledge that the educational system can attract con- scientious and capable people such as Larry Davis. Mrs. Hughes has taught school on and off for nearly eight years while at the same time raising a family of five children along with her husband Art. I have taught for Granite and Emery County school districts in first, second and third grades, and my favorite she subject area is reading, said. Based Using Outcome and Education Mastery and enjoy Learning, children and helping them to progress, she said, adding that her goal at the beginning of each school year is to assist in developing each of her students to their fullest potential in every aspect of learning and life. Her goals are that each child she teaches will become a better citizen, grow in knowledge and greater understanding and be happy and and confull of fidence. Our students today are our future and leaders of tomorrow. Now I can see that changes in the ways we educate our children are very beneficial, not only in helping our students to become better prepared to meet the challenges of life after school, but also to help teachers become better people. Education is moving in a very positive direction, and Im happy to be a part of it. He then returned to college and received a physical education minor wih an emphasis on coaching. Mr. Johnson accepted a teaching position at Manila High School for one year and She has inspired students and teachers alike with her Leap Elementary School in teacher. then taught at Bowler Logan-dal- e, Nev. He moved to Green River in 1984 and taught at Green River High School for two years. He then moved to Overton, Nev. where he taught at Moapa Valley High School for one year. Now he is back at Green River where he coaches the girls in basketball and track. He says he enjoys living in Emery County. Famum Young says teaching is a great profession. I enjoy associating with young people and watching them achieve. I believe being in the classroom is like on standing and Mrs. Bingham has been working with the Utah Travel Council to get videos of the tourist attractions of Utah to incorporate into the fourth grade Utah history curriculum. She also teaches teachers, serving as inservice leader in Clawson-Emery-Ferro- 1 n Her hobbies include horseback riding; racoon, bear, lion, elk, deer or rabbit hunting; cross country skiing; Paid Political Adv. and snowmobiling. After teaching in Price for four years, she crossed the county line to teach fourth grade at Cleveland Elementary. She has taught there going on nine years and presently teaches a first-secon- d Precinct No. her ward Primary. sacred gound. This is Mr. Youngs 29th year of teaching. He has taught grades two through 12 during this time. He was a junior high coach for four years in basketball and track and was a teaching principal for 11 years. As an educator, he has served as president of the local education association in Challis, Idaho and Burley, Idaho as well as the Emery County Education Association. Christy Bingham began her teaching career at the School for the Deaf as a child development specialist. After teaching there for four years, she moved to Price where she not only taught first and second grades, but managed the Price pool where she also taught swimming lessons Day activities, dinosaur theme for the school year, and her Healthy Lifestyles activities which are held each morning before school.
