To help keep motorists safe this holiday weekend, which begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, and ends at midnight, Sunday, Nov. 29, the Utah Safety Council urges drivers to start thinking about winter weather and road conditions that can change rapidly for the )Q American Heart Association worse. A thorough checkup for your car can help you avoid disaster. The brakes, battery, exhaust system, headlights, Quids, tires, wipers and cooling system should be checked by a qualified mechanic. Brush all snow off your windshield, windows, mirrors, roof, hood and trunk lid before each trip so your vision will not be blocked. Taillights and headlights should also be brushed off so other motorists can see you. Since sunlight creates a dangerous glare off snow, sunglasses should be worn for daytime driving. A day of ex posure to sun and glare without sunglasses can also reduce your ability to see at night. If you and your car get stranded, stay with the vehicle; do not wander off and risk frostbite or hypothermia. Run the engine for heat about once every hour (or every half hour in extreme cold). Leave one window cracked open freezing winds and driving snow can quickly seal a car. Clear an area around the end of the exhaust pipe to prevent carbon monoxide backup. Tie a brightly-colore- d cloth to your antenna to signal other motorists that you are stranded. Roads may become wet or frozen. To help prevent skidding, minimize gear shifts, accelerate and brake gently. If your car does begin to skid, turn in the direction of the skid. As is the case with all other highly congested holiday periods, the council offers the following tips. Wear your safety belt and fasten children into properly-installe- d child safety seats. The National Safety Council estimates that more than 12,000 lives could be saved each year if everyone wore safety belts. Winterize your car before starting out on a trip. Have a qualified mechanic check the brakes, fluids, battery, tires, exhaust system, wipers and headlights before the journey. Allow yourself plenty of travel time, especially if weather and road conditions are bad. The rules for getting an auto safety inspection have changed, and the Utah Highway Patrol has changed some rules of its own to make the transition easier on drivers. Contrary released to information last month, the Highway Patrol will require only one safety inspection on a car during 1988. Drivers should have it done during the 60 days prior to registering their cars. cases window 1987 safety inspections will expire before it comes time for drivers to register their cars. That does not matter. Traffic enforcement officers will waive enforcement of window sticker expiration dates until after the car is due to be registered in 1988. It must be sent in with their auto registration materials. Since the motor vehicle division will not register a car unless the certificate is included, the presence of a current registration tells law enforcement officers the car has been inspected. The license plate decal will serve the same purpose as both a window sticker and a plate decal has in the past. The new system has the advantage of moving all the deadlines a car owner must be concerned with into one time frame. Registration, safety inspection and auto emissions tests can all be taken care of at the same time, once each year. Alpha Chi was established at SUSC in 1985 with 66 charter members. Another 44 students joined the national organization this fall.
