Speaking of the girls performance in the scrimmage Saturday night, he added, I think our fastbreak was something that we did well tonight. Well probably rely on that a lot this season. For the Lady Spartans, that season begins tonight, Wed- nesday, when they host Wasatch Academy at 5:30. This is not only the season opener for Emery, but it is also the league opener as each team hopes to get a good start on conference play. After the game with Wasatch Academy, the Lady Spartans will have one of their toughest battles of the season when they travel to Richfield on Nov. 25. After a Dec. 5 game at North Sanpete, the girls return home to play Juab on Dec. 18. Every picture tells a story People continued to flow through the doors into the Emery County High School cafeteria last week. They were there to honor the school's athletes who had just completed seasons in football and volleyball. sat at a round table with my wife and a pair of slide projectors. Just a couple of hours before, had sat in my classroom, I I sorting through the hundreds of slides I had taken through the season, hoping to find some appropriate for a slide show arranged to music. It was a mess trying to get from the opening to the closing note. And when finally got what seemed to be the right shots in the right slots, the ghetto blaster ate my tape, and I was left with a mangled Memorex 90. So I was a little nervous sitting in the cafeteria as people continued to file in. The thought of Murphy's Law kept calling home. "If anything can go wrong, it will," and knew it would. When it got close to the time to begin eating, knew I'd be called on to bless the I I I able only to remember those fractured blessings of my good food ... good meat ... etc. But youth fortunately, for everyone, was ignored. Later thought about how, after the I blessing, leaped up and scurried to the food. I was embarrassed, not then, but certainly later, about my obvious haste. After I finished eating, began thinking about the slides, and a sense of accomplishment came over me. I felt completely documented. The whole season was there spread out on the table in hundreds of pieces of tiny Ektachrome. One of my favorites was of coach Jones at the Delta game. It showed him with his head down, walking along the sideline. It was late in the game against the Rabbits a game Emery could have won but didn't. One could tell that from the shot of the coach. Delta went on to win the state championship while Emery went on to dream of what could have been. food. felt I worthless, I I I There were several shots of Seth running, blocking and tackling, and there were some, too, of him on the Emery Mc-Cou- sidelines, leaning on crutches while helplessly watching the action on the field. Most of the slides had of the Grantsville game were of Emery's defense since the Cowboys had the ball most of the time. Shots of Emery's offense included Davin Stilson getting sacked, Joel Wilson and Devin Arnold looking for running room, and Dell Stilson going up for passes while Grantsville defenders slammed him from two or three sides. A volleyball slide of coach Bunderson was much like the one of coach Jones. He was walking to the bench after a timeout with his head down, and his eyes emitting deep thought. The game was against Delta in a match which Emery lost in two qames. The Delta girls, like the Delta football team, went on to win the state championship. Emery finished the volleyball season in fifth place in the region. There was a shot of Cindy Jones in the Delta game which was also taken during a timeout which showed her looking away from the huddle. The frustrations of a back injury and the inability to perform up to her I own standards in the final Lady Spartan home match were apparent. Among the slides was one of Bob Swinburne, principal, who was captured along the sidelines, looking out onto the field. The photo offers a sense of leadership and control and shows an obvious interest in the game. Before the slide show, the coaches showed highlights of the football season on video tape. Television sets were placed around the cafeteria, and through the show there were bursts of laughter and ripples of emotion as great plays were recalled from the 10 Spartangames. Coach Bunderson, on behalf of all the coaches, thanked all those associated with the fooball and volleyball season, including the cheerleaders, drill team. Booster Club, parents and support people. A lot of help had gone into the success of the program. Then we went through the slides. Between me and my wife, the show only got off time a little bit. But it was there briefly and then it was over just like football and volleyball had been. |
