Combining motherhood with nursing career delivered By ELIZABETH HANSON While the world'i most famous nurse evaded marriage to devote full time to founding the nursing profession, a Huntington woman has sue cessfully combined motherhood and a nursing career for 20 years in a manner that Florence Nightingale must envy. Earlene Allred Black had nine children when hired as a nurses aid at the Emery County Nursing Home at Ferron. She took time off to have her tenth child and served for a time in public health duties before plunging into LPN training and returning to the home in 1970. There were an LFN and two aids for the day shift, two aids for the afternoon shift and two for the graveyard shift. The drugs put up by the LPN were given out by aids later In the day. Doctor Demman of Price was the doctor when we could get him. He came every month or so to check the patients. In an emergency we did the best we could. I had worked a month or so when I saw my first patient die. I was scared to death. We never knew what they died of. We had no way of knowing. I like to remember my time at the Emery home as a very personal achievement and have found myself the recipient of love and gratitude from patients and families. I so much love and appreciate the ones who have worked with me in all departments of the nursing home care. At the time I went into nursing I was desperately seeking a personal identity, something to feel good about. Nursing has given me a new outlook and value on life and personal enrichment, she says. "I wanted to find out what the responsibilities of the board were, but during the few months I served, the biggest concern seemed to center about the funding of the facility and employee benefits. Employee benefits were cut back to half or less. I feel the board needs to know if the patient is getting the care to which he or she is entitled.
