We look forward to playing these games. We need the competition to determine how we match up, the coach said. Emery will also face Manti this week in a home game Saturday. In the state tournament last season, the Spartans got an opening round win against the Templars. But entering the game against Millard, the Spartans have tasted both victory and defeat and each came by wide margins. In the opening game, Emery lost to Richfield by 19 and then came home to whip East Carbon last Wednesday 68-5- 7. However, Coach Nelson felt better about the loss than the win. I didnt feel good about the way we played against East Carbon, he said. We missed too many easy shots, were cold all night, and just didnt look sharp. The coach was not pleased the with defense 21 in the fourth. Defense was a concern of Coach Nelson going into the game and Our afterwords, he said, defense is still suspect. On the other hand, the coach was pleased with the balanced scoring. Five Spartans finished in double figures. Ryan Baker, Blaine Peterson, and Terry Thomas each had 14 while Jeff Thomas added 11 and Ryan Young chipped in 10. Emery also looked good on the boards, nearly doubling the rebounding production of East Carbon. Guy compiled 16 points in two rounds against his Juab opponent in the 119 lb. division before getting a pin early in the third period. However, Juab went on top 3 in the 105 lb. match when Emerys Kevin Behling was pinned in the first round. Juab widened the margin in the 112 lb. match when Rod Lunt took a 10--2 major decision over two-poi- scored seven points in the final nt round to take the win. Perhaps the best performance by Emery was turned in by sophomore Guy Allred who build a 16-- 0 lead through two Emery witjiinw.at 10-Just after that match, Emery 9. Allreds win brought , , McCourt was awesome in pinning his man with just five seconds left in the first round to give Emery the 5 lead. Juab closed the gap to 8 when Maughn Wright defeated Dale Thomas 3 in the 145 lb. division. Wright got the lead in the second frame with a reversal,, an escape, and a takedown although Thomas stayed with the Juab wrestler by scoring on a reversal. Emery fell behind after Clint Davis was pinned by Bryon Warren in the 155 match. Davis fell behind 0 at the end of the first period and then was pinned at the 1:17 mark of the second period. In the next match, Jordan Hatch gave Emery back the lead when he recorded a third period pin in the 167 lb. match. Hatch was in control of the match throughout as he built a lead of 0 in the first period. That went to 2 at the end of the second period, and just when it appeared that Hatch was , 2-- 8-- 11-- to about collapse from exhaustion, he got the pin with just 28 seconds left. Hansen lead at the end of the first period but his opponent closed the gap to 9 at the end of the second period. In the third, Hansen started from the down position, got a reversal and held his man off for the win which gave the Spartans the lead at It all came down to the final match which Juab took with a second round pin to record the 8 win. Emery also got wins in exhibition matches from Neil Sherman who won by a pin in the first period, Murray Mathis who got a first period pin, and Hugh Johnson who also got a t first period pin.
