The apprentice teacher would start up the career ladder by first teaching two years and possibly a third with the assistance of two professionals, usually the principal and a leader and must demonstrate effective teaching skills, classroom and" time management, and have ability to challenge students to higher teacher levels of thinking skills among other attributes. After two years, the teacher will be evaluated and usually relegated to professional status. If not, the teacher will be told his shortcoming and given a plan for improvement. At the end of the third year, if the improvement has not been made, his contract will not be renewed. Sometimes ineffective teachers who lose their contracts in one district migrate to another and the whole sad pattern is repeated. Emery County teacher Lois Patterson suggested that the migration be stopped. The professional teacher will be considered competent to teach effectively and to progress through the salary schedule based on increased competence and evidence of continued professional growth rather than tenure. The professional teacher may be eligibile for an optional assignment with additional responsibilties made on a yearly basis and compensated according to district salary structure.
