The hearing was the second in a series to carefully review the recommendations of the national Commission on Excellence in Education. Miskel told the committee, The Congress should take a lead in efforts to improve teacher preparation nationally by actively supporting basic be good to them. Orrin Hatch and University of Utah Graduate School of Education Dean Cecil Miskel discuss ways to improve education, from a viewpoint of Utah educators and families. Hatch is conducting a series of hearings before the Committee on Labor and Human Resources looking into the problems of America's schools. Miskel, named by President Reagan in September to the National Board of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, testified before Hatch's committee on Nov. 2. Hatch has invited Dr. David P. Gardner to testify at a Nov. 9 hearing. Dr. Gardner is the former president of the University of Utah and chairman of the Commission on Excellence in Education whose report, "A Nation At Risk," kicked off the current debate about schooling in America. col-- J to attend. There is a lot of paperwork left to do now as the seniors apply for scholarships, financial aid and acceptance. While the seniors were learning about colleges the sophomores and juniors are racking their brains out on the PSAT. Local merchants and home businesses displayed Christmas items for the show. Among the displays was a selection of Discovery Toys shown by Fran Woolstenhulme of Castle Dale. The Woolstenhulme children, Nikki, 4, Jeb, 2, and Steven, 5, were among the most interested spectators at the show. This week at the library, flower arrangements by Tessie Cox are on display.
