Don't lock me up in the deep freeze again!" I The WORLD OUTDOORS 7HAT happened to th "boun- - ty hunter" after "ths law" came to the Old WestT Many of them kept on working they just changed their habita bit. In-stead of chasing outlawed people, they chased outlawed animals. Predators such as the wolf, coyote, fox, bobcat and pests such as the rattlesnake and magpie have through the years been the target of bounty hunters. From the start, the bounty sys-tem had opposition. Some wildlife authorities contend that the bal-ance of nature is a good one. Predators kill the weak and the sick, they argue, pointing out that this insures the health and vigor of the species preyed upon. "Kill olf your fox population and watch the rodents take over," is another anti-bount- y argument. Some states discontinued the bounty system after discovering they were making payment on animals killed in other states and brought home for collection of the bounty. Also, the individuals re-sponsible for making bounty pay-ments often didn't know one species of wildlife from another. Other states kept the system. Less than five years ago, one state estimated it was paying more than $2,000 each month in bounty payments. Another state took stock after little more than a decade of bounty payments and discovered that its conservation department had paid out more than a million dollars in bounties. The day of the real bounty hunter is gone, in the Old West, r.nd in the world outdoors. In the states where bounties are still paid, most payments are for ani-mals taken during open seasons. V'kllife populations have dis::p-r- - aicd to the extent that animai3 o.-.-lo subject to hu.iiuy are or t' r "protected" I win I o EaoJ By LYN CONNELLY (NE of the most ridiculous almost pathetic sights in Hollywood these days is that of King Elvis Presley trailing about the glamour city always com-pletely surrounded by bis devoted band of bodyguards . . . Never before in years of lush living has any Hollywood star ever felt the need of such protection, but Elvis feels important enough to warrant it . . . Someone is awake and on watch even while he sleeps . , . Makes one wonder what it is he is afraid may happen. Apparently he wasn't so con-cerned in the army . : . There were enough people around there to protect him in case of trouble but in Hollywood and New York he insists on these guards (whom he pays himself, of course) . . . You haven't lived, it is related, unless you see Presley driving home after a hot day at the studio, at the wheel of his Cadillac, fol-lowed by his second Cadillac which is followed by his Lincoln ... Is he a nervous cat, just star-happ- y or solicitous about the em-ployment of old friends? Any guess is as good as the next. CAPITOL: Peggy Lee, who has been on a quiet side lately, bursts out of her shell with a great al-bum, "Blues Cross Country," done in her own inimitable style . . . This is swinging blues at their greatest and Peggy is queen of blues songs . . . She fairly shakes the rafters with such favorites as "Kansas City," "Basin Street Blues," "Los Angeles Blues," "San Francisco Blues," "Boston Beans," "St. Louis Blues" (but of coarse!), "Fisherman's Wharf" and others. Sinatra must have been think-ing of his broken engagement to lovely Juliet Prowse when he re-corded "Point of No Return."
