Their input at the meeting gave everyone the correct background and timing of the hospital's actions and also cleared up the matter that one individual contacting them did not precipitate their actions, as had been declared over and over in the Orchard Villa Homeowners Association annual meeting The hospital s input was especially appreciated because it was reiterated several times in the meeting in order that there would be no mistaking w hat had really happened w hen the Hospital Board decided what to do with their own property. It is very unfortunate, uncharitable, and ex tremely mean spirited that the individual conducting the Orchard Villa Homeowners Meeting did not even bother to call the hospital to get the fact a before he spoke. It would have been a simple matter to do so, and as God guides my pen, that person had no right to misrepresent to everyone that the hospital had acted from on person making telephone call, I mean, does anyone actually believe that one such powerful individual actually exists? If so, lets get that person making phone calls to stop the Middle East situation, to get the terrorist situation handled, and on and on and on. Why waste all that power and clout to rase an orchard hill of dead trees? Cordial mente, indeed. My my, how urbane we have become. Now if we could just work a little harder on the facta. Sincerely, Pat Winxenried Orchard Villa homeowner, Moab Put the feed lot on private property Dear Sam and Times readers; Driving south of town on Hwy, 191 on a windy day youll notice a big dust cloud on the west side of the highway long before you get to it. It appears the whole countryside is floating in the wind. At times the sun is blocked out by the dust clouds. Your first thought might how could all the dirt be in the air instead of on the ground? As you get closer you begin to see cows. Cows stumbling around with their eyes shut to keep the dirt out. A crust of sand around the eyes where the moisture has collected it. Then you see more cows, and more cows, hundreds of cows, and it dawns on you where the dust is coming from. Each of the 400 or so cows has four sharp hooves that plow into the already barren ground with every step to create more loose dirt to blow away. Following each cow is a calf with four sharp hooves. That comes out to 3,200 sharp hooves chopping up the ground with every step, and hungry animals take lots of steps. It seems some people have no shame, their destruction of something doesnt seem to bother them in the least, especially when Its not their property or when the sand is not blowing in their eyes. When I, it is stat land thats blowing away into the next county nobody caree. Not the rancher who doesn't know what to do with his cows and not the state bureaucrata who would rather have the pittance paid by the rancher than the land being destroyed. The state obviously has taken up the don't ask, don't tell policy and added don't see, dont care to it. Now I dont have anything against making a living ranching. In fact I made a living doing just that for several years. Its a good life. But I never destroyed the land. I made sure there was plenty land for the number of cows, so It wouldn't be all dug up and blown away. Thia is the very worst time of the year to have cows all bunched together, the windy season is here and the dry season is starting. The ground is left barren with no chance of growing anything the rest of the year, The state people say, It looks a little over grazed" when totally destroyed would be much too polite a word. If a person is going to have a feed lot he should make sure theres plenty of room or put the feed lot on his own property, in his own back yard. Mike Jones Moab Moab students are limited by individual effort Dear Editor, Way to go Franklin Seal (one of my substitute education in the teachers). I sjient my entire Grand County School District and 1 tend to think that my education was never limited by the programs that surrounded me but by my individual effort. 1 felt like I had ample opportunities to grow and that It was up to me to take advantage of those opjxirtunities, I graduated from Grand County High in 1997 with 79 others. Of those 80 students many have gone on to college including one to Harvard and another to Rice University, They took advantage of the opportunities K-1- 2 afforded them right there in Moab, There is always room for improvement but I wanted to add my voice to the side of those in appreciation of the efforts and sacrifices of those who already and always have worked for excellence. TYi those who see specific problems I encourage you to get Involved and help find specific solutions. Thanks again to all those who had a part In my education, you are appreciated, David Louthan Cedar City, UT (Currently attending Southern Utah University) . Double standard the Editor; It goes deeper, write to my friends in the Catholic Community. My heart goes out to them at this time of scandal in the priesthood of their church. The focus oflate is the sexual abuse of children by a few priests. The bigger problem is that of cover-up- , The hierarchy of the church for the last thousand years has developed an elitist tradition of cover our sins, maintain our image at all costs, The crime here is self protection through secrecy. Wt will hide the truth of our actions from the people, we will maintain the image that we ere holy, even if To 1 This is a double standard. They, through the practice of cover-u- p are Baying, we are above both Gods law and mans law. No longer should the Catholic community allow their priesthood to protect, cover up or transfer priests who are abusers of the moral law of both God and man, They are, as currently structured, a law unto themselves. The priesthood needs to change and become, not accountable to themselves, but to the people they are supposed to serve their parishioners. Internal tends to hide a multitude of sine, most of which is cover-up- . Wane Kenneth Moab we are not. The people have confidence in us, it must be maintained! The silent mind is in the pink Editor; My personal opinion of the problems evolving in school stems from what I would call the silent mind. When a dhild is 3 or 4 year old we can notice that a they move through their day, they carry large block of the silent mind". Their heals are not filled with constant talking to tl Mmselve Their brain tissue is soft and open pink. At this age they are the moat amazing learning machines ofthe universe. They can learn many languages at once if taught. They learn the names of all worldly object and their memory is amazing But something happens to us in school as we are brought into the socialization process. 1 believe that if we altered this process with the silent mind left in tact many positive attributes would be discovered. How many of us can have a silent mind for even 10 minutes? We chatter constantly. 1 believe that the taproot of genius is found in these blocks of the silent mind". So if more care were given to carefully keeping the mind open, I believe outburst would be less common. First I would eliminate mandatory attendance and bells between classes. We are afraid that our children would stop going to class. But that is not true. Given the complete freedom they would attend with open free minds Leaving the grade system intact simply allows for a ruler or gauge their ruler By rtcK forcing attendance you end up with more minds in class that want to be there and are still open to receive. Attendance amid still be used in the grading, so if they want the grade they will attend. Why do we recreate? It is one of the most powerful ways to silence the chatter of the mind. When I am playing soccer my mind ia awake, open, silent. After soccer ao many of my emotional problem caa just dissolve. Life is great! School could start every day with open pep rallies. There would be drumming and dancing to start the day. Boys on one side, girls on the other. Drum rhythms would be taught so that one could choose to either drum or dance. Each sophomore class would choose a class rhythm voted cm at the beginning of the year. Second period: From the time a child in our society is about 11 until they are in their late teens they are barely touched. In the second period, segregate the boys and girl and teach shoulder and neck massage. The muscles in this area are tin- - connection between thoughts and feelings. It is here that much stress can be removed and on can more easily enter an open state, Light drumming and flute or violin music in the background would slow down what occurred in first period. So at the end of the second period two important things have happened to keep the mind open and pink. Third period. In thia elaaa I would call it social studies and there would be open dialog where anything that came up could be talked about. It i here that student would learn respect for each other and be opened to so many idea. They would begin to look at the worlds problems that they are inheriting. It is in this class that the genius would begin to spill. During this class while talking and listening, knitting or needle point could be encouraged. Many Pro athletes use this to unwind after the game. Fourth period. Perhaps the study of food and cooking and gardening. Emphasis on nutrition. Then a lunch. Fifth period. Now the mind ha been slowly and carefully kept open and it is awake and ready to take on science. Sixth period: One day math, the next day music or pottery. The desire for drugs and substance is really a desire far the silent mind". It is why adults drink and do drugs. It is why the youth follow the adults. At some point we might be ready to try some of these ideas for school because little else is working. The Ttmei-tndepende- editorial. The T4 COPY April 25, 2002 Dear Sam, Adrien & Sena, I have been removing trash from trails, roadsides, parks and streams for over 8 years, I am writing to report that things are getting really bad out there! It is virtually impossible to walk or drive anyw here in Moab or the surrounding area without being assaulted by the sight of trash. This severely mars the beauty of natural areas and detract from the pleasure I derive w hen hiking, walking or riding g in my car. Nothing is more glorious or than the natural world, so I selfishly clean areas that I want to eryoy! I spent two hours on a stream clean-u- p about a week ago. After walking the equivalent of four blocks in the water, my friend and 1 had gathered up one 40 gal40 gallon trash bag of recyclable and lon bags of trash! And this is an area I do with some regularity! I get similar amounts or more every place where I do clean ups I believe that we as a people allow this trashing to occur because we have become so disconnected from nature. Further, it appears that we feel powerless to do anything about these problems Sometime we are quick to complain; we want to wait for other to take care of problems that could lie solved easily by individual involvement There are things we ran do that require little effort, yet have an enormously positive impact on our environment For example, if each of ua touk a reusable cloth bag to the food store, we would reduce the need for the production of plastic and would cut down on the hundreds of plastic bags that end upon the roadsides, tangled in trees, and in the waterways, There ere many other simple things we can do to make things better for the planet, which ultimately makes things better for each of us If you would like to find out more about this, check out the Recycling ('enters exhibit at the library through April It ha lots of information that you may find useful Sincerely. MelmcofT Monti County placed one road block after another Dear Sam, This letter is in reference to the front page article about the defunct tram on Highway 191 and 128 North of Moab, This threat of a lawsuit comes as no surprise to me and many others, I have never seen ao much blatant misuse of power against any person or group, Our county council not only predicted thia business failure but guaranteed it by placing one road blink after another. Tills request was brought before the planning and zoning committee and was found to lie in compliance with Uie present zoning at that time. The committee then returned an approval of the request and the council should have made the same decision. What is wrong with the old way of doing things, when a developer conies In before a county body, No room for disrespect Dear Editor: I am writing to clarify a point In Franklin Seal's article on local education, I am friends with Franklin, We spent time talking prior to his writing the article. I would lie surprised, however, if I used the term to descrilie Montis population. I view I see myself as one the people of Moab as of these people, having moved to Moab with the bunqier stlcktr 'Question Authority' on my car. I think questioning is an imMirtant action that often leads to positive change. What I do see in Moab, however, is a segment of the community who communicate with each other disrespectfully, This is true of both students and adults, For approximately nine years, I have conducted surveys at the middle school and now at HMK. Student consistently mark the comment students treat other students respectfully.., with one of the lowest mark on the survey For over 20 years, d Admired couple Editor: Unlay as t traveled to Arches National Park on my way to work, I stopped to visit with Leo C, Ilenrle, I had In my travels to work for many months admired Leo and Hallie Lawrence Ilenrle walking the distance from their home just past Courthouse Wash into Moab to have lunch at Moab Diner. This unique couple held hands, walking stride for stride, ljeo with his stoop and his walking stick. Hallie always wearing her different seasonal hats, the image of a very beautiful woman. Monday thru Saturday they walked four miles a day and Sundays walked 8 miles. At the young age of 78 years of age Hallie and lao climlwd Mt, Pealo, and still amtinued to cbmb other areas. Now, Leo will have to climb mountains aksie, as 1 billie has left this world to climb mountains elsewhere. requesting a erniit? They should say, Welcome to Grand County, what can we do to help you? And then mean it. Our property right are sacred and we must protect them. We voters of Grand County must remember this at the next election and the members that caused thia mess and lawsuit And dont forget the four council members raised taxes last year and passed themselves a large pay raise this year. Isnt it just amazing that the original three county commission seats was changed to seven and then we hired an administrator on top of that? dont believe that we need eight people to do that job, do you? 1 Sincerely, RnyM Tibbetts Moah 1 have worked in Moab's schools I have found it is possible to communicate even the hardest Information In a respectful manner. Yet those of you who have been In gyms, at the hall park, in community offices and businesses or in schools have likely witnessed rude treatment by locals, I have even received report that certain adults, after t aring into schist! personnel, publicly buast about It. The iaaue ns 1 see it Is not one of anti authoritarianism attitudes, but one of exercising basic considerate communication skills with each other. We are a diverse community. It is a fact: we care deeply for children. My wish for Moab citizens ia Unit we could use this common ground and work together to raise our children In wsys that benefit our families and our society There is no room for dlMresjaict in this task, whether it be in spirts, in the ciaasnsim, in the homo or the broader community, Margaret L.
